My second Forbes column focuses on important research regarding the modern university presidency.
"The challenges and opportunities presidents face are deeply intertwined with their identities and experiences. If we are to develop and support the next generation of college presidents, we must prioritize leadership development that acknowledges these differences and equips all leaders to meet the moment with resilience, courage, and authenticity," writes AASCU President and CEO Chuck Welch in his latest op-ed for Forbes.com. #highered #leadership https://lnkd.in/e9m275eV

Pleased to see the official release of our national study on presidential leadership competencies today! Along with Kevin R. McClure and Wonsun Ryu, Ph.D., we surveyed more than 700 college presidents to identify the leadership traits necessary to succeed in today’s challenging and political #higherEd landscape. Grateful for the leadership of Academic Search, in particular Shawn Hartman, Ed.D. for their initiative to support this research. Thanks to the American Academic Leadership Institute, American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU), and the Council of Independent Colleges for their participation. In addition to the seven key competencies, it’s worth highlighting some key takeaways: ➡️ there is no “checklist” ✔️ for presidential leadership competencies today ➡️ Public perception 📢 influences the salience of certain competencies ➡️ Emotional intelligence was a key ingredient in trust-building and resilience 🧘💪🏽 ➡️ Cabinets can be your biggest asset - and your biggest challenge! 📄 ➡️ Data acumen 📊is more than just numbers!

"Why does work feel more challenging to me than my peers?" If you've ever asked yourself that question, you may be a First-Generation Professional (FGP). There are many thousands of FGPs in the world who have never thought of themselves that way before. But once the concept is introduced to them, it's like all the puzzle pieces come together. It explains why building a network feels like such a heavy lift and contextualizes the need to learn an entirely new language to navigate a foreign work culture. If you're the first person in your family to work in a professional capacity, we want to hear from you. At Baem Leadership, we're dedicated to supporting and engaging FGPs throughout their careers. Our research findings will help companies with talent-retention efforts for early-career FGP employees and help them identify and develop FGPs already in their ranks. While this report is about higher education presidents, I'm confident that the findings apply across different industries and levels of leadership. Content knowledge and technical skill are the price of admission...and leaders who last complement them with "soft skills"--personal and interpersonal skills--like those articulated in this document. If you'd like to discuss how any of these findings might be relevant to you or your organization, let me know. Whether you are in higher education or another industry, I'd love to help you get clear about your journey and get moving down the road!
I help leaders and organizations get clear and get moving through coaching, executive search, and strategy.
Over the past year, researchers Jorge Burmicky, Ph.D., Kevin R. McClure, and Wonsun Ryu, Ph.D. engaged in a project to identify essential competencies for the college presidency. Their work was sponsored by Academic Search and includes partnerships with other leading higher education organizations including American Academic Leadership Institute, American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU), and the Council of Independent Colleges. The report they developed, titled Competencies for the College Presidency: A National Study of Effective Leadership in Higher Education, was released last week and is available at https://lnkd.in/gFaru3Pb. The researches identified seven competencies, and I’ll be sharing some reflections on those over the next few weeks. The most striking finding to me is that of those competencies, six of them might be categorized as so-called (and misnamed) “soft” skills—those pertaining to either personal characteristics or engaging effectively with others. Feel free to contact me if you are interested in discussing these findings. Whether you are a current or potential college president—and I daresay this likely applies outside higher education as well as within—or a board member or senior leader, this report merits your attention…and I’m happy to help you make the most of it.

❓ Is Academic Leadership an opportunity or impediment to your career? This was the topic of a rich discussion with our esteemed panellists across #HigherEducation today. It was great to see so many of you take part from across the sector and add your questions and insights to the discussion. A huge thank you to everyone who joined us live and our fantastic panellists - Professor Stephen Tong, Sara Corcoran, Professor Sally Jackson, Monica Greco and Professor Jane Roscoe. The range of discussion points we covered in just under an hour was vast: 💡 From what it really takes to step into a more strategic role and the skills, attitudes and motivations needed to succeed. 💡 To what universities and leaders need to do to support those rotating in or stepping up to the Head of role in a meaningful way. 💡 We also discussed the big challenges coming up, the need to make hard decisions ethically and responsibly, and the things Heads of can do to support themselves compassionately - as it is a broad and sometimes tough role. A role that really requires a different skill set. 📽 If you registered, the replay will be on its way to you later this afternoon. If you didn't and would like to receive a copy of the replay, please comment below. We'll also be following up on additional questions that we didn't have time to answer very soon. #EducationLeadership #AcademicLeadership #Education #University #UniversityLeadership
