The broadcast news landscape is changing. I’ve often heard journalists say doing digital news broadcasting isn’t their thing or it’s not as important as a traditional newscast. That type of thinking is wrong. Our audiences have changed their viewing habits and they are getting news from digital platforms. From sources who try to sound and look knowledgeable, but are not reliable. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had someone send me a TikTok thinking it was real news, or something from another social media asking me if the post is true because they are not watching traditional newscasts. These are the viewers we are trying to reach by adding digital broadcasting to all of our stations across the nation. News is happening now and as journalists, we must get information out that is accurate and vetted! Not waiting for the 5, 6 or 10. Viewers want their news as it happens. That’s why Gray Television has made it their mission to give the viewers what they want! News in the palm of their hands, as it happens, from local and trusted journalists that know their communities and the people in them. That’s why we’ve rolled out brand new tech and provided newsrooms with training to run it. This is the future and we’re making it happen. #digitalnews #ctv #ott #journalism #journalismmatters #localjournalism

💡What are some signs your organisation would be a great fit for Broadcast Revolution’s Newsroom?💡 The media needs expert voices from a variety of sectors to comment on the biggest stories of the year. By planning for what’s ahead and reacting to breaking news, our Newsroom can help brands raise their profile through the insight and expertise they provide. Here are some questions to ask yourself: 📌Do you have spokespeople with authoritative, expert voices on key issues in the news agenda? Industry knowledge can be invaluable for producers looking to add depth to a story. 📌Can you be agile in responding to opportunities? The high-speed nature of the rolling news agenda means organisations often need to be quick on their feet to lend their voice. 📌Are there several people in your organisation with a diversity of experience and backgrounds who can be media-trained to speak on behalf of your company? News producers will always endeavour to choose the best fit for any given story. At Broadcast Revolution, former journalists Ashleigh Carroll and Mike Young are ideally placed to recognise where your spokespeople can add value to news stories, and we can help you become “newsroom-ready” through media training and crafting your key messages. I feel the need for a brief rant. Like many colleagues, I was dismayed to learn that Warner Bros Discovery was planning to shut down NewsHub. Apart leaving a big gap in the television news subsector, it's a crushing decision for the many hard-working news workers affected. However, sympathy aside, it's really important that any solution be based on a coherent diagnosis of the underlying reasons for such developments. And there's a lot of dubious arguments circulating right now- especially those with vested interests. For a start, Newshub's demise isn't the fault of an uneven playing field because TVNZ hasn't always paid dividends- it's not simply all because Google and Facebook have stolen the news- and it's not the fault of the government (past or present) for not introducing the Fair Digital Bargaining Bill sooner. Neither is this event the 'canary in the coalmine'-this was the explosion! The 'canary' asphyxiated several years ago when Three News was still part of MediaWorks under Oaktree and the management hollowed out the 3 newsroom. I wrote a diagnostic of this back in 2019 if anyone's interested- https://lnkd.in/gyEVPQxE And the solution to the crisis of the news ecology isn't going to come in the form of the Fair Digital News Bargaining Bill- this is a poorly-conceived piece of legislation based on a misdiagnosis of the structural factors undermining the news ecology. This will benefit some of the larger news producers, but as WBD NZ itself admitted, such measures wouldn't have made any difference to the decision of its global parent (which is carrying some US$50billion in debt). The Bill won't solve the structural issues and it will likely foreclose superior policy alternatives. I wrote about that too in my submission on the Bill (here- https://lnkd.in/gGA7hDbu ) There's no magic bullet, but a new model for news across multiple platforms is evidently needed. Two thoughts here would be to a) look at some kind of multi-platform public interest journalism publisher model- maybe the proposal for a Regional News Network coupled with the RNZ model of news sharing would be a good start; and b) look at introducing a levy on digital advertising (currently around $1.8 billion). Just 1% of that would provide as much as the much-maligned Public Interest Journalism Fund on an ongoing basis...

The future of public broadcasting- and especially documentaries, is in the balance. And the battle lines are drawn, at least here in Oz. Newly appointed chairman of the national broadcaster, the ABC, Kim Williams, is one of Australia's leading public intellectuals- not bad coming from the man who once ran Murdoch's local empire. And he's not afraid to speak his mind. I was particularly drawn to his thoughts about the current state of documentary on the ABC. Asked ( at 27'35") how he felt it was performing, he didn't mince his words: “I think documentary is in a bad place and it needs restoration. And I do not mean it in an unsupportive way to existing ABC commissioning people.” So if it's not the talented and thoughtful commissioning editors at fault, where is the problem? Possibly in the ABC's top-heavy and highly centralised content selection process which strangely doesn't include any program makers? Just a thought. Commissioners have been turned into post-office boxes for a content group driving the ABC in the opposite direction of where the chairman believes it should be heading. So what should the ABC be doing with docs? Here's what Chairman Kim thinks, and I wager the Australian public would agree: “The ABC needs to rediscover how to spell documentary and to give documentary the presence and prominence that it needs, particularly in terms of the ABC’s responsibility as being a pillar of democracy in Australia,” he says. That doesn't sound like much of the recent output from Auntie's doc department, or the timid work we've heard has been green-lit by the content commissars. Nor does it conform with the recent awful decision to gut the output of the ABC's religion and ethics slot, Compass (which is bound to annoy the chairman). Is a stoush brewing? Let's see if the content controllers got the memo.
