https://lnkd.in/e-9E8eZJ France is introducing restricted advertising and a tax on fast fashion garments sold, this is a legislative move which could reduce the environmental and social #supplychain negatives of some of the worst offending companies. It is a positive move and one the UK and other countries could replicate. I think this needs to be paired with consumer awareness - we should teach our children in schools the true #environmental and #social cost of poor quality, low cost purchases.

NEWS - France leads the way in creating legislation banning advertising by certain ultra-fast-fashion companies – and mandating these companies pay fines per article of clothing by 2030. The current bill has passed in the lower house of parliament. It would also mandate that these retailers include an item's reuse, repair, recycling and environmental impact in the product's price. Whilst I applaud the concept of the French Bill to tackle wasteful consumerism and curb certain brand tactics. There is a negative social / economic impact that isn’t being discussed. What is being defined as Ultra Fast Fashion and how will it measured? We all remember Royal Weddings, the first glimpse of ‘the dress’ and then the race to get copies made using similar silk and trims. Ultra Fast Fashion in its earliest form. Fast forward to todays speed to market of the latest ‘xxx’. So - What if some of todays Ultra Fast Fashion brands have incorporated Eco Design and raw material selection into the products? Would they be penalised in the same flat rate manner? What about those sections of society that wish to follow fashion but due to the cost of living crisis really struggle and Shein and alike are their only opportunity to do so but will be financially penalised? The French system has to be fair, it has to take into account how it’s been produced and the impact measured? What will that look like? I get it, Shein and alike with their ‘producer/brand/ online direct sale’ model and added tax avoidance needs to be quickly addressed. Just don’t shift the burden and cost ultimately onto the consumer without support and education. We need to present and showcase the brands that manufacture and retail using lower environmental impact fashion products. Give those brands who wholly commit and deliver lower impact fashion, the tax break incentives (funded by the Bill) to allow for that price accessibility for the consumers who will be penalised AND introduce more meaningful fashion rental systems. As much as I like the symbolism, I don't think it's realistic or even fair...you? 🎯this should therefore apply to all retailers or brands, regardless of price segment or volume (the sports industry is not really friendly to sustainable development, etc….) ❗️It all starts with supply chain traceability, so why not set a deadline for all retailers and brands to implement it by…? ♻️depending on your environmental and social score then you can think about an additional tax to pay or a credit to receive (for example based on annual sales) 🇪🇺this must be done at least at European level to have a real chance and impact #fastfashion #tax #supplychain #traceability

By penalising the worst offenders and limiting the promotional tactics that fuel fast fashion, France is taking first steps to stop the "fast fashion madness". Here are three key facts about the new law: 1️⃣ Penalties. Penalties of up to €10 per item on "ultra-fast-fashion" brands like Shein. This aims to discourage the rapid production and disposal of cheap, low-quality clothing. 2️⃣ Advertising Ban. A ban on advertising for these fast fashion companies is suggested. This is first step into a future where we need to change consumption behaviors. 3️⃣ Offset of negative impact of fast fashion. The law is part of a broader effort to address the fashion industry's carbon footprint, labor rights abuses, and economic distortions. 👍🏽 To my mind: France is taking a bold step here. 👍🏽 Two remarkable aspects of this new law stand out: ➡️ Targeting the business model: Rather than just focusing on recycling or material standards, France is directly tackling the fast fashion model of hyper-production and disposal. It is a surprise and a huge step in the right direction: yesterday, the Assemblée Nationale in #France passed a proposal for a law against #ultrafastfashion in the first instance. If the #law goes through the courts, France would be the first country to take clear legal measures against the spread of this cheap #fashion.   What exactly does the law contain? ➡ #Advertising, as the video below shows, would then no longer exist, at least in France, or is prohibited: Influencers who advertise cheap fashion on social media channels risk high fines of up to 20,000 euros ➡ As explained in my last post, surcharges will be levied on the sales price before tax (from 50% of the value of the goods up to a maximum of 10 euros), which will later be redistributed ➡ In future, the money collected from the surcharges will benefit fashion companies that produce sustainably or are part of the #circulareconomy. Of course there are many questions: ❓ Which companies does the law affect? Only SHEIN, Temu Inc, Primark or also H&M, ZARA SA, Decathlon International, KIABI and what about Nike and adidas? ❓ Who will benefit, i.e. which companies will receive the money collected? The sustainable and circular fashion industry consists mainly of micro-enterprises that have neither the resources nor the time to complete administrative applications. ❓ Isn't the time it will take to fully implement the law by 2030 too long? Shouldn't we react sooner and immediately? ❓ What about TikTok or Instagram #influencers from other countries, like the lady below? Does a law like this, which only applies in one country, achieve the desired effect?   My conclusion: I am delighted that there is FINALLY some #movement on this issue. As I said before, I would have liked to see other measures (simple plastic fashion tax, import limits, early and faster introduction of this eco-passport for fashion, etc.), but this is still an important first step. France are pioneers.... Not something you normally start a sentence with, however a new bill is being approved to curb the rampant pace of fast fashion. I'm no pioneer, yes I have purchased from H&M and other such establishments, but legislation has to start from the top for our habits to change. (I used to sit in the smoking section on the train to work and think that was normal!) Advertising revenue could well be banned as part of this new legislation. H&M are being scrutinised in this article, but there are many more organisations to whom our industry benefit from advertising revenue. In France, they have passed the first bill to penalise fast fashion and its low-cost clothes, in an attempt to limit the environmental and social impacts resulting from it. What does the new law consist of? Firstly in the inclusion in all e-commerce of fast fashion clothes and accessories, of messages encouraging reuse and repair and providing information on the environmental impact of the products. The second article that makes up the law, on the other hand, introduces the tax based on the principle of EPR, i.e. the extended responsibility of the producer to manage the entire life cycle of the product - from the raw materials used to its disposal - in compliance with the regulations, thus establishing how the taxes imposed on clothes and accessories also depend on the environmental impact, the carbon emissions of their production and whether they are fast fashion or not. The third and last article then restricts advertising that encourages the purchase of clothes and accessories produced by companies specialising in fast fashion, explicitly mentioning Shein whose 7,200 new clothing models per day, totalling 470,000 products made available to the consumer, leads the Chinese company to offer '900 times more products than a traditional French retailer'. #fastfashion #francia #law #shein #temu #eu #sustainability #fashion
