What does Red Lobster have to do with Tech? They’re not too different, actually. I’ve been reading some articles about Red Lobster’s recent troubles. They are expected to file bankruptcy soon. This specific part caught my attention: “In 2021 and 2022, Red Lobster brought on a new CEO, chief marketing officer, chief financial officer and chief information officer. All left the company within two years.” Of course Red Lobster and the restaurant business is very different than tech. But ultimately, every business is about #people. When there is turmoil at the top, when executives come and go, CEO after CEO, CFO after CFO, CTO after CTO, CMO after CMO, CHRO after CHRO… that is a clear sign that something is *fundamentally* wrong at the company. Quick! Think of the biggest, most-well-known tech brands out there. Think how not just their CEOs, but their entire key players have stuck around for a while. #longterm Culture is built from the top-down, not from the ground-up. There is institutional memory, learnings, insights that can never be captured in a wiki (anyone remembers those?), a transitioning document or on a board meeting. Next time you’re looking to join a company, look at their management team, how stable has it been? Next time you are looking for an executive position, do you homework. As a leader, how often do you still have 1:1 time with your management team? As the business expands and responsibilities grow, it's easy to let regular one-to-ones slip. Kirsten, our Head of Finance, and I aim to meet up every month at our favourite lunch spot, Vigour, in St. Helen's. We talk about how the business is doing, areas where we are performing well and areas that need development. I hope my fellow directors will forgive me for saying before Kirsten joined the business, our finances were pretty chaotic! We weren't costing jobs accurately and we were placing unnecessary strain on other areas of the business too. Kirsten has been the driving force for change in our processes, drawing upon the tried and tested expertise she has gained throughout her career. As CEO, I am endlessly grateful to have Kirsten in my corner, making informed decisions, allocating resources wisely and cultivating a culture of fiscal responsibility. It's important for me to continue to carve out time for these monthly catch-ups to ensure Kirsten has the support she needs to help us drive our growth. #team #support #development

As a finance pro with a background in marketing, brand building and consumer brands, I loved this article about Liquid Death’s new CFO. Specifically - note his non-binary strategy to success. Even though numbers are black and white, the story they tell can be gray.
