Really looking forward to welcoming this Aussie delegation to ESA’s European Astronaut Centre, and especially helping to foster opportunities for collaboration - there are so many! I’m blown away by all that I’m learning and the breadth and magnitude of what could be possible. On-site here at the EAC (and also with our neighbours DLR) are human spaceflight and microgravity sci-related capabilities including: - Microgravity sciences (e.g. materials, fluids, life sciences, biology, life support systems, physiology, nutrition, medicine, etc) - Payload and ISS experimental facility engineering - Operations (e.g. eurocom, medical/fitness, payloads, scientific missions) - Medical support (astronaut health development and maintenance on Earth and in space) - Lunar robotics analog that’s in development (LUNA) - Training approaches, knowledge and tools (for Astronauts, ASCANS, ISS operators, flight surgeons, VR and AR tech for astronauts, underwater facility to prepare for spacewalks, parabolic flight expertise, etc) - Crew support processes and tools - Preparations for next-gen activities, strategies and facilities - Lots of experts with insights from their lived experiences to learn from - Astronaut outreach, support to educational activities and comms - …and so many more. The Collins Aerospace spacesuit will not only allow more people to participate in a spacewalk, it will also contribute to driving down the spaceflight costs. The combination of a lighter suit with fewer parts will result in about 30% less hardware being launched into space. As a new space race revs up, propelling humans back to the moon and toward a Mars landing for the first time, mysteries remain about the unique pressures of space flight on humans – especially for those blasting off through new commercial space travel operations. For the first time, researchers have data on the physical and psychological impact of spaceflight on an all-civilian crew. The Penn Medicine team’s study of the two-woman, two-man crew (dubbed Inspiration4) lays the foundation for a biomedical database that will be critical for studying and addressing spaceflight health risks for civilian crews, at a time when investment in non-governmental spaceflight continues to grow. http://spr.ly/60419GkR1

With Starliner's continued problems on the ISS, Boeing loses, SpaceX wins, but ultimately human spaceflight suffers from a lack of reliable human spaceflight transportation. Multiple transportation systems are a sign of a healthy spacefaring species. Too few means of transportation can halt programs and delay progress.
