“Kids just don’t want to work nowadays” …... It’s a common theme among many Construction business owners, superintendents, and project managers. I’ve heard it for years. If you are shaking your head in agreement, then buckle up, because you might not like this post. If your eyes narrowed and your temperature rose, keep reading. This picture was taken from the 2024 WNC Construction Job Fair, and this was a small portion. Over 1,000 high school students were in attendance during this two-day event, many of whom I got to speak to. Over the last two years, I’ve spoken with dozens upon dozens of High School, Trade School, and Community College Students and their teachers. What have I learned? We as an industry have it wrong. The majority of these young men and women are ready and willing to get after it. They want to learn, they don’t want student debt, they want a company that cares about them and will help them create a future. Here is the kicker. Not once did I hear them ask “What’s your starting salary?” or “How much will I make this year”. What they did say is “I just like working with my hands”, “I want a place I can grow with”, “I want a good future”, and “I don’t want student debt”. And most of these “kids” are in High School! Maybe we haven’t done enough to reach out to them. If you have been in a meeting lately and heard “We need people, but no one wants to work, " look no further. Will they need training? Yes. Is it our job as an industry to provide that training? Yes. Is there a future workforce? Yes. Will these young men and women immediately provide the same production, value, and skill as your Top Dawg Foreman? Probably not. But maybe it’s time to look at our people as investments rather than a cost. Senator Ossoff, If we sucked for 3 months It will take us at least that long to recover Once upon a time We lost $10k in one weekend Knowing how we got there was the start Inbound Peak starts in October Seasonal people should start by 10.01 We didn't do our Seasonal Job fair until 09.2x We brought on Seasonal people in DECEMBER But here's where we did something different Seasonals are normally spread evenly Across the 4 shifts You know, minimize the risk But this year, we decided to Atlanta Falcon-it "Let's let all the regular employees choose first And then backfill with all the Seasonals" I worked weekend night shift What do you think happened to my shift? I lost 1st, 2nd, and 3rd string POCs to a more desirable shift And ended up with ALL the Seasonal Hires Worst week, 20 new hires at once first day, was all classroom 12 hour shifts That's what? 240 hours Day 2 was half day classroom Another 120 hours Day 3, they slow down vets Easily lost another 120 hours 480, lets call it 475 hours in the hole (more like 500) Team, we will NOT break even next week That's an UNREALISTIC expectation But what we CAN do Better yet, what we CAN'T do is be the same 475 hours in the hole NEXT week We CAN'T lose more than 425 hours We'll get cussed out as long as we're losing Rome wasn't built in a day, nor was it destroyed in one Did they use actual curse words? No, but corporate cuss outs are worse We lost 425 hours the following weekend Okay, now we need to aim for 375 WE had our game plan and sights set And you guessed it, corporate cuss out Whatever Now lets go for 325 "You guys are underperforming. Sign this." Cool beans. 275 is the goal "You guys are dragging the building down." Whatever Following week 225 "How can you be engaged with paperwork on you?" You know how this ends By Week 10, we had broke even What happened the final 3 weeks was amazing As we faded Like at the end of The Sandlot I'm doing this to know how to do it in the future We had all the goofy shit in the recipe for disaster Like Week 3 trainees training Week 1 trainees The RPDC has been open THREE months So what if you're at 36% on-time. Perfect Change 2 or 3 things.. BOOM! 50% A few more things.. 65% Going from 36% to 90% Is more about NOT beating yourself Which is why I use the Atlanta Falcons example Did the RPDC try to go 100% to capacity Within the first 90 days of opening? It took Walmart over 2 years That's being generous A Million sq ft warehouse is not a government program Tax payers have nothing to do with the KPI You have to run it! For the last 19 years Every jacked up situation I've encountered I sent the action plan from my work email to myself I wrote the action plan these are not company secrets glide path, burndown, backlog oh my Getting Warehouses MORE thruput using the SAME hours. The jobless rate in the CareerSource Citrus Levy Marion region was 4.5% in June, up 0.7 percentage point over the month [...]. Rusty Skinner, CareerSource CLM’s chief executive officer, noted that the bump in the jobless rate and number counted as unemployed is in line with what the region typically experiences moving into the summer months with seasonal shifts in education support and agriculture employment, as well as an influx of post-secondary students returning to the area looking for summer jobs before going back to school. “What we’re experiencing at this time of year is a typical summer slump; it is not unique to our region nor to any other area in Florida for that matter,” he said. “That doesn’t mean we take our foot off the gas; we know businesses are eager to hire which is why we strive to connect them with those looking for work.” Skinner pointed to two such opportunities: the Summer Job Fair that takes place Tuesday, July 23 from 5-7 p.m. at Howard Academy Community Center in Ocala, and the Citrus County Regional Job Fair set to take place at the College of Central Florida’s Citrus County Campus on Aug. 27. What does Grassroots Grocery do during the week when we're not hosting our Saturday Produce Party? One major focus is our commitment to nurturing the future through regular produce deliveries to middle and high schools in Upper Manhattan and the Bronx. A prime example of this commitment is our partnership with New Directions Secondary School, initiated by a committed school social worker, Jolyon Davis, LMSW,SIFI, who sought out resources for his students. Today marked a particularly special moment, bringing me back to my educational roots in the Bronx. This time, invited by Jolyon not for a produce delivery but to share insights from my career journey alongside a diverse group of professionals at the NDSS career fair. Speaking at this event was an opportunity to demonstrate the synergy between our weekday school deliveries and our vision for a healthier, empowered future for young minds. I hope that today I helped some students envision a future as rich and diverse as the produce we deliver. A heartfelt thank you to Jolyon for integrating Grassroots Grocery into the fabric of NDSS, and a shout-out to all the other professionals today for enriching the career fair with their insights and experiences. As Grassroots Grocery continues to bridge the gap between food access and education, every delivery, conversation, and partnership, especially ones like with NDSS, underscores our belief in the transformative power of community engagement. The #jobless rate in the CareerSource Citrus Levy Marion area was 4.1% in August, an uptick of 0.1 percentage point over the month [...]. Dale French, CareerSource CLM’s executive vice president, said that while there was a small jump in jobless numbers, there were much larger increases in the #laborforce and labor force participation. “What we are seeing is a large increase in workers moving to the area and reengagement of workers that may have been on the sidelines looking for better opportunities,” French said. “This is great news for local businesses that are in need of talent. Now is definitely a great time for anyone looking at re-entering the workforce or simply seeking a better opportunity.” French added that one such opportunity is the regional fall job fair that takes place Sept. 27 from 3-5 p.m. at the College of Central’s Florida’s Klein Conference Center in Ocala.
