Honoring Leo Vinton Butts Leo Vinton Butts was the first African-American graduate of the University of Wisconsin School of Pharmacy and the first African-American to play for the UW varsity football team. A World War I veteran and activist, Butts later owned and operated a pharmacy and, in his UW Ph.D. thesis, was one of the first to document the history of African-Americans in pharmacy. President Welsh grew up in San Antonio, coming to Kyle Field on football Saturdays and learning Aggie traditions from his father, Mark A. Welsh Jr., Class ’46. His dad was the first of 15 Aggies in the Welsh family. Six days ago, Long Beach State announced it was firing head coach Dan Monson after 17 years. However, the school decided to allow him to coach out the Big West Tournament. So, he just led LBSU to the Big West title—and the school’s first NCAA Tournament berth in over a decade.
