Sir Dave Brailsford applied the term ‘marginal gains’ with the British cycling team, and in doing so, not only made a huge impact on the sport but also encouraged many of us to look for ‘1 percenters’ or ‘marginal gains’ in our own lives. The theory is sound and, as Brailsford proved, it can work well in certain sports at particular moments. However, there are two fundamental flaws in applying this theory to the mass population. Firstly, we are not operating in the same environment as the British cycling team, nor do we share the same goals. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, Brailsford was seeking marginal gains because 90% of their foundation was already in place, which is far from the case for many of us when it comes to performance. How about we relax a bit on the marginal gains and, instead, focus on the other end of the spectrum—going after the big wins, which are usually the low-hanging fruit. Once that’s in order, we can then narrow the focus to more marginal improvements. Have a great week. No Weakness. Marcus Smith #InnerFight #NoWeakness #TheInnerfightWay

Recognizing the need for recovery, Thijs took a strategic step back. And started using the structured and adaptive guidance of the JOIN Cycling app to embarked on a journey of rehabilitation and improvement 📈. Today, Thijs returns to Emporia, Kansas, USA, stronger and more determined than ever. Ready to race!💪🏼 #Unbound #comebackstronger IFS Ultimo IFS

It is a good practice to indentify the cycling corridors that will be prioritized for snow clearing and to plan operations accordingly. Cities that do this usually provide a map of the priority routes. The City of Edmonton goes a step further: they indicate winter priority routes on the ground with a simple sticker at the bottom right corner of every standard bike lane sign.

Short introduction video about my research and its relevance. Cool fieldwork included :)
Hey LinkedIn network! As my very first post on LinkedIn, I'm happy to share a video that we recently made about our project on carbon cycling in coastal wetlands. This video talks about our field project at the coast of the Wadden Sea (Germany) in 2023. Big shoutout to Felix Tisch for helping us make this short piece! https://lnkd.in/e8tSqakC

Did you know there are over 100 Cranksgiving rides held internationally every year? Cranksgiving is a true cycling holiday - it's an unusual one too. Grassroots organizers flip the script on the traditional consumerist zeitgeist. The cycling community 𝑔𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑠 𝑏𝑎𝑐𝑘 to those less fortunate by riding (or racing) to help fill their local food bank shelves. 1️⃣ First time trying mountain biking? Here's a tip! Keep your speed comfortable for you. We know it's tempting to try and keep up with everyone else, but it's best to bike at your own speed. Once you get comfortable with a certain speed, then you can push the limits a bit.
