Rightly so we are fixated on Sustainability. Too often the main focus is on the environmental aspects of ESG. As Tamae illustrates in this example, the S or Social in ESG is vitally important and remedying the poor practices of the past is essential in ensuring we create thriving and connected cities and communities.

This is a truly incredible deep dive into the history of how Massachusetts has created a region of housing scarcity and wealth segregation through zoning over the last 50 or so years. Amy Dain digs into individual municipality policy decisions and key periods in the 1970s when things changed dramatically, setting ourselves up to become a region of race, wealth and class segregation and housing scarcity on a level we couldn't have imagined. This is well worth a read to begin to understand not only how we got here... but how we can begin to claw ourselves out of this hole and rethink our region to create a better, more equitable future Greater Boston complete with housing abundance. Imagine winning $20.5 million to transform your community with grant funding! A stellar example of a successful story regarding funding is Louisville, Kentucky. The city received $20.5 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation as part of the Rebuilding America Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) program. The funding is directed towards two major projects: a $15.5 million implementation grant to fund the design finalization and construction of the Reimagine 9th Street Project and a $5 million planning grant to fund design work for Broadway Street. Both projects will enhance connectivity and economic development, improving efficiency and safety. The projects also include enhancing sustainability in the proposed target areas by encouraging and offering different modes of transportation. Some of you may know about my current involvement in Westbrook government. However, this November 7th, I plan on taking the next step. With this post, I'm pleased to announce my candidacy for the Westbrook Zoning Commission. As a young person, I believe I have a unique point of view. When perfected, Zoning Commissions are a force for good---promoting economic development, encouraging environmental sustainability, and driving businesses into town. As a voting member of the Westbrook Zoning Commission, I will promote the following: ♻ Sustainable Infrastructure: As a waterfront town, global climate change poses an enormous threat. Promoting carbon-neutral and storm-resistant infrastructure can ensure Westbrook will continue to grow for generations to come. 📈 Economic Development: Westbrook's waterfront location and access to Route 1 and I-95 allows for high economic prospect. Zoning should be used to promote new business in town, not push them away with overly-complex regulations. 🏘 Affordable Housing: As of now, there aren't many affordable housing developments in town, discouraging young or lower-income people from living here. As a young person myself, having options for future housing is important. 🏢 Town Center Revitalization: For too long, the Westbrook Town Center has been in need of a rejuvenation. Developing the Town Center into a walkable, shoppable, and social area will promote a larger sense of community and bring new faces into town. 🏰 Historic Preservation: Westbrook has an extremely rich history, one that not many people know of. Preserving and upkeeping historic architecture is important to ensure our history can be visualized for generations to come. The New Jersey State Development and Redevelopment Plan Update Is Happening! The State Planning Commission (SPC) will be hosting a series of webinars to gain feedback on an update to the New Jersey State Development & Redevelopment Plan, also known as the State Plan. The State Plan is a document prepared by the SPC that contains a comprehensive framework intended to guide future development, redevelopment, conservation, preservation, and restoration efforts in the state of New Jersey. The panel will also provide feedback on the relationship between the goals and Climate Change and Social Justice issues. One of the recent projects I have been working on.

Innovators at Lincoln Avenue Communities have begun construction on Willis Senior Lofts, an affordable housing development for lower-income seniors in Rochelle, Illinois. Forty-five units will be set aside for households earning less than 60% of the median area income. This project is not only socially conscious but also environmentally sustainable, aiming for Enterprise Green and Net Zero-certification. The project shows a commendable mix of private commitment, community participation and diverse financial instruments, underscoring the importance of innovative solutions in creating essential housing options for the aging population. 🏡 To combat the affordable housing crisis, City of Boston Mayor Michelle Wu has promised to prioritize efforts to increase affordable housing during her electoral term. This past summer, she proposed adjusting the Inclusionary Development Policy (IPD) to reserve 17% of new commercial developments for income-restricted units instead of the current 13%. Additionally, she proposed reserving 3% for Section 8 voucher holders.
