As part of our ongoing collaboration with Andrea Grottoli from The Ohio State University, we’ve been testing UZELA (Underwater Zooplankton Enhancement Light Array), a technology designed to boost zooplankton availability for corals. Zooplankton provides essential nutrients that support coral growth, health, and resilience, helping them better withstand stressors like heat and bleaching. During our recent fieldwork, we worked with postdoc Dr. Ann Marie Hulver and grad student Shannon Dixon, collecting photos of corals near UZELA lights from Orbicella Coral Trees™ and took coral plug samples to assess its effects. If successful, UZELA could significantly improve coral resilience against heat stress, supporting coral restoration efforts worldwide. It’s #TaxonomyTuesday, and we’re celebrating an entirely new family of black corals. This is the first new black coral family discovered in 18 years, underscoring the untapped potential for groundbreaking discoveries even in seemingly well-surveyed areas. Discoveries like these help emphasize the need to increase exploration efforts, especially in mesophotic and deep coral habitats. Remotely operated vehicles such as ROV SuBastian can collect coral species with precision and provide invaluable in situ data, including imagery that reveals information such as colony color, habitat, and associated invertebrates. Two of the samples that helped advance this discovery were collected during expeditions on the R/V Falkor (too) in 2023; both were deposited in the Smithsonian Institution, Museum of Natural History collections in Washington, DC. The new family is Ameripathidae; the genus is Ameripathes, and the species is pseuomyriphylla. Scientists used an integrative approach, combining morphological and genomic data to identify these corals as representative of a new species, a new genus, and a new family. They conducted morphological analyses of the specimens using a scanning electron microscope; they also completed molecular analyses through DNA extractions and phylogenetic analyses via high-throughput sequencing. World Mammoth Center in Yakutia to have museum, cryofacility, laboratory The World Mammoth Center in Yakutsk is planned in compliance with the Strategy for the Development of the Russian Federation's Arctic Zone and the National Security for up to 2035 VLADIVOSTOK, September 3/ The World Mammoth Center in Yakutsk will have a cryopreservation facility, a scientific laboratory, and a museum and exhibition complex, Yakutia's presentation at the Eastern Economic Forum reads. According to the presentation, the World Mammoth Center will have three blocks - a cryopreservation facility for the mammoth fauna, a scientific laboratory building, and a museum and exhibition complex. The World Mammoth Center in Yakutsk is planned in compliance with the Strategy for the Development of the Russian Federation's Arctic Zone and the National Security for up to 2035. The center's construction is on a long-term plan for the integrated social and economic development of the Yakutsk urban agglomeration up to 2030. More than 70% of the world's fossil mammoth bone and other mammoth fauna remains are located in Yakutia. As a rule, the mammoth fauna objects found in Yakutia are well preserved. Practically 90% of all unique finds with soft tissues have been in Yakutia. Additionally, fossil animals with preserved biological fluids have been found in Yakutia only. The Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) runs on the campus of the Far Eastern Federal University in Vladivostok on September 3-6, 2024. The main theme in 2024 is "Far East 2030. Prospects for biological evolution on Hycean worlds - ABSTRACT :Recent detections of carbon-bearing molecules in the atmosphere of a candidate Hycean world, K2-18 b, with JWST are opening the prospects for characterising potential biospheres on temperate exoplanets. Hycean worlds are a recently theorised class of habitable exoplanets with ocean covered surfaces and hydrogen-rich atmospheres. Hycean planets are thought to be conducive for hosting microbial life under conditions similar to those in the Earth’s oceans. In the present work we investigate the potential for biological evolution on Hycean worlds and their dependence on the thermodynamic conditions. We find that a large range of evolutionary rates and origination times are possible for unicellular life in oceanic environments for a relatively marginal range in environmental conditions. For example, a relatively small (10 K) increase in the average ocean temperature can lead to over twice the evolutionary rates, with key unicellular groups originating as early as ∼1.3 billion years from origin of life. On the contrary, similar decreases in temperatures can also significantly delay the origination times by several billion years. This delay in turn could affect their observable biomarkers such as dimethylsulfide, which is known to be produced predominantly by Eukaryotic marine phytoplankton in Earth’s oceans. Therefore, Hycean worlds that are significantly cooler than Earth may be expected to host simpler microbial life than Earth’s oceans and may show weaker biosignatures, unless they orbit significantly older stars than the Sun. Conversely, Hycean worlds with warmer surface temperatures than Earth are more likely to show stronger atmospheric biosignatures due to microbial life if present. " https://lnkd.in/eP9KAFJT Emily G. In the Tree of Life programme, we are always innovating new methods to help us produce reference genomes for more species from around the world. 🌎 And we must remember, tiny creatures sometimes only offer tiny amounts of DNA. That's why our scientists have developed the PiMmS protocol. 🧬 Head of the Tree of Life Programme at the Wellcome Sanger Institute Mark Blaxter says: “The PiMmS method finally gives researchers, both at the Sanger Institute and beyond, a way to gain greater understanding of the genomes of tardigrades and other very small creatures. Rather than just noting the presence of a tardigrade species – for example through DNA barcoding – we can lay bare the entire genome and explore the biology of cryptobiosis." Rewriting tardigrade history through amber time capsules! Researchers from Harvard University have made groundbreaking discoveries about our planet's most resilient creatures. Marc A. Mapalo, Jo Wolfe, and Javier Ortega-Hernández (https://lnkd.in/eH2JXWPw), in their recent Communications Biology paper, have unveiled fascinating insights into tardigrade evolution. Key findings: • Used cutting-edge confocal fluorescence microscopy on rare 80-million-year-old amber fossils • Described new species: Aerobius dactylus • Reclassified Beorn leggi within the extant family Hypsibiidae • Estimated tardigrade divergence ~500 million years ago in the Cambrian (older than dinosaurs!) Why this matters: Tardigrade fossils are incredibly rare - only four known crown-group specimens exist! This study provides crucial calibration points for understanding their evolution, suggesting independent development of their famous survival abilities. Did you know? Last week the Onto-DESIDE consortium met in Arnstorf, Germany, near the production site and headquarters of our partner Lindner Group. The consortium also visited the Nortec floor panel system production and refurbishment/remanufacturing facilities at the Lindner site, as they are part of the construction use case of the project. The main focus of the meeting was to set out the vision of the last 8 months of the project, and beyond. Study Reveals Oldest-Known Evolutionary "Arms Race" - American Museum of Natural History: A new study led by researchers at the American Museum of Natural History presents the oldest known example in the fossil record of an evolutionary arms race. These 517-million-year-old predator-prey interactions occurred in the ocean covering what is now South Australia between a small, shelled animal distantly related to brachiopods and an unknown marine animal capable of piercing its shell.
