Your heart is in good hands at M Health Fairview St. John’s Hospital, ranked #1 in the Twin Cities for Cardiology in 2025 by Healthgrades. This puts St. John’s, located in Maplewood, Minn., in the top 10% of cardiac specialty programs in the nation. The hospital also earned HealthGrades’ Coronary Intervention Excellence Award and is a five-star recipient for heart failure treatment. “Our cardiology team is focused on delivering exceptional care to patients in our community,” said Will Nicholson, MD, vice president of medical affairs at St. John’s. “That means top quality, full-spectrum cardiology care is now available closer to home for everybody here in the east metro area.” But St. John’s isn’t the only leading hospital in the M Health Fairview system. Excited to share our new publication in @journalofhospitalmedicine - "Things We Do for No Reason: Routine respiratory pathogen panels for ED & hospitalized patients". RPPs are often ordered routinely for patients with acute respiratory illness, but is this the best approach? We reviewed the evidence to find out. The tests lacks specificity and..for immunocompetent patients, routine RPP testing didn't significantly impact key outcomes like antibiotic use or length of stay. RPPs also have drawbacks like high cost & long turnaround times. Based on our findings, we recommend against routine RPPs for immunocompetent patients. Instead, consider targeted testing for influenza, COVID-19, and RSV based on clinical presentation & seasonal prevalence. We believe this targeted approach can help optimize diagnostic testing practices within our institutions & the broader community. Check out the full paper for more details & let us know your thoughts! 🏥🔬 Enhancing Surgical Outcomes via Surgical Safety Checklist Performance Exciting new research from the team at UT Southwestern Medical Center explores how improving performance on the Surgical Safety Checklist can lead to better patient outcomes. Using the OR Black Box®, UT Southwestern conducted a detailed analysis of over 4,500 surgical cases and found higher checklist performance correlates with: ✅ Reduced mortality ✅ Shorter hospital stays ✅ Fewer ICU admissions Unlike many previous studies that relied on manual audits and were susceptible to observation bias, this analysis used an AI-powered platform to objectively track compliance and team engagement in real-time. On October 8th, U.S. News & World Report released its annual rankings of Children's Hospitals, called "Best Children's Hospitals". It is a 174-page report describing the methodology and data tables which I scanned through. Appendix C-10 has the data on Pediatric Pulmonology which I took a deep dive into. In the attached carousel, I have recreated two datasets that matter. If I were to shop around for a hospital for my care, what really matters to me is the outcome data for a particular condition I am seeking care for and not the reputation score. However what separates the top-ranked "Best Children's Hospitals" is their reputation scores, not the outcome scores for selected conditions as in asthma here. It's a different matter whether the outcome scores used in the rankings are good measures. We will discuss them in another post. What are your thoughts? Feel free to like, share, and comment. #healthcare #hospitals #physician
