🤑 In early June, a significant development unfolded in Illinois as the state legislature approved a revenue bill aimed at curbing interchange fees tied to excise taxes and tips on consumer tabs by card issuers and networks. The legislation introduces the Interchange Fee Prohibition Act for both credit and debit card transactions. Interchange fees, commonly referred to as swipe fees, are paid by businesses that accept customer payments by card. Under this new law, any entity like a payment card network, an acquirer bank, or a processor would be prohibited from levying fees on the tax or gratuity portion of goods and services transactions.
