I want to celebrate Taraji P Henson’s accolade of being one of Time magazine’s Women of the Year for 2024! Taraji, with all her charisma and talent, has opened up about the battles she's faced, from fighting for fair pay to the disrespect that comes with being a Black woman in the spotlight. Despite being a powerhouse in Hollywood, her struggle for equality is something that resonates with so many women I work with. It's frustrating to see someone of her caliber still having to justify her worth. Her recent emotional interview highlights the persistent pay gap that plagues not only the entertainment industry but also the wider professional realm. With Black women earning significantly less than their white male counterparts, it's a stark reminder of the inequalities embedded within our society. Taraji's experience, despite nearly three decades of acclaimed work, including an Oscar nomination and four Emmy nods, encapsulates the broader struggle for fair compensation and respect that Black women face across all sectors. As a leadership coach for women, I see brilliant women undervalued every day, and Taraji’s experience really brings home the urgency of this issue. From advocating for mental health to starting her own ventures to create opportunities for others, Taraji is taking action in ways that inspire all of us. It's a reminder of the power of using our voices and platforms to spark change. What strikes me most is Taraji's determination to not just fight for her place, but to make sure the door stays open for those coming after her. It’s a powerful message for all of us, especially those of us working to lift women in their careers. It’s not just about one of us making it; it’s about making sure we all do. As the saying goes, “A rising tide lifts ALL boats!” This is more than a call to action. It's a wake-up call to recognize and value the brilliance of Black women everywhere. As someone who coaches women to find their voice and succeed, I see Taraji's story as a crucial lesson in resilience, advocacy, and leadership. With all of her advocacy for women and her amazing portrayal of Shug Avery in A Color Purple, she more than deserves this accolade. “But while I may be the first woman in this office, I won’t be the last.” These words, shared by Vice President Kamala Harris after she and President Joe Biden won the 2020 election, resonate deeply, echoing the dreams and struggles of countless women before her. Harris didn’t just acknowledge her historic role—she highlighted the path forged by generations, honoring “Black women, Asian, white, Latina, and Native American women throughout our nation’s history who have paved the way for this moment.” She particularly emphasized Black women, “who are too often overlooked, but so often prove that they are the backbone of our democracy.” The moment wasn’t just about politics, just as her current role as a presidential nominee who is perhaps closer than any woman in history to becoming the first woman U.S. President isn’t just about politics, or even just about Harris. This moment represents hope made into tangible reality. It shows girls that their aspirations—whether to lead a nation, run a company, make scientific discoveries, or help reshape society—are within reach. It’s not about one woman’s achievement, but about redefining what leadership looks like. When diverse voices shape policy, we all benefit from a fuller perspective on human experience. Harris’s milestones remind us that change happens through persistent effort, courage—and the work of an entire coalition of supporters. Women have always been at the forefront of change, often without recognition. Harris’s role brings these contributions into the spotlight, challenging us to rewrite the narrative of society. As we witness this milestone, let’s channel our energy into creating a world where women’s voices are not just heard, but amplified. Where girls don’t just dream of leadership—they expect it. In my research on Black women in the workplace, I uncovered the same issues as noted in this article. Black women suffer from harmful tropes that prevent their upward mobility in the workplace. More Black female leaders are needed to empower other Black women in the workplace. And allyship is crucial for Black women to get ahead.
