AI developers wish to prevent their models from being stolen or misused. Sella Nevo, a leading AI researcher and the current Director of the RAND Corporation’s Meselson Center, is dedicated to protecting AI systems against emerging threats. In a recent report published by RAND, Nevo introduces three strategic steps AI developers can take now to secure their models: 1. Create a comprehensive security map: This roadmap should cover all potential attack vectors and will require careful planning and investment. Achieving complete security might take several years, so starting early is key. 2. Identify and implement urgent security measures: Key actions include limiting access to model weights, hardening interfaces, conducting advanced third-party red-teaming, and implementing defense-in-depth strategies. 3. Start R&D for advanced security: Securing AI against highly resourced actors requires long-term research and development, so companies should start this process as soon as possible—focusing on physical bandwidth limitations, hardware security models, and isolated networks for training.
