Common questions a lot of authors receive: ❓ “Why did you decide to write?” ❓”How are the book sales going?” ❓ “How long did it take you to write this book?” ❓ “Have you made any money yet?” Allow me to clear up some of the misconceptions folks have about becoming an author, but I can only speak for myself. 🪶 I did it because I felt a strong calling to tell my story, with the direct purpose to let others know they are not alone. 🪶 Book sales?? I mean, of course I pay attention. However, I’m not obsessed with the numbers. I’m obsessed with the results of the impact of sharing my heart (and skill sets). 🪶 My memoir, Shattered to the Core, took years (needed perspective/time). COREAGEOUS took about one full year (ish). 🪶 No, I have not struck it $$ becoming author. In fact, it is very expensive to produce a quality book - it’s not about making my money back, or money at all… Because some things are worth more than royalties. In 2018, I decided to write a memoir. The previous year, I’d met Oprah, produced and directed a stage adaptation of my novel and flew across the country to attend a Hollywood party with Ava DuVernay. I guess you could say I had a lot to write about. The doors of opportunity were wide open for me. I needed to take a big leap of faith and do something extraordinary. I was inspired to write a book about my life. This was my first time writing a memoir. When I started writing my book, a few questions crossed my mind. What would people think of my life? How will I explain my bad decisions to my kids? Who would want to read a book about my life? In the words of the late great author “There are years that ask questions and years that answer.” ~Zora Neale Hurston, Their Eyes Were Watching God. I didn’t know why I decided that was the right time to write a book. I just believed my life story was worthy to be written about and could help someone else along their journey. Many women have been inspired by my resilience and determination to make a better life for myself and kids. Others have cried among the pages of my book because it so closely resembles their own story. My book, Pieces Of Me: Things I’ve Learned Along The Way is my first exploration into nonfiction writing. It has certainly become one of my proudest achievements. And to think, I almost decided not to pick up my laptop and write.
