The ATLG - Architectural Technical Leads Group has today published an open letter in response to the Grenfell Phase 2 Report, endorsed by 62 UK architectural practices, including Broadway Malyan.   The ATLG welcomes the release of Phase 2 of the Grenfell Report and its recommendations for the design and construction industry. The group urges both the construction industry and government to support the recommendations in the report by taking the actions laid out in the letter. The key actions are:   1. Strengthened Guidance for Clients 2. Clear Gateway Guidance and Provide Adequate Resources for the Building Safety Regulator 3. Transparency and Lower-Cost Availability of Safety Standards 4. Update and Extend the Approved Documents and Manual 5. We have committees to look at other impediments such as time limits and other administrative policies that might keep people out of the system. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) is aware of the recent Memorandum for the Administrator of General Services (GSA) regarding The White House’s request to review the GSA’s Guiding Principles for Federal Architecture. AIA is extremely concerned about any revisions that remove control from local communities; mandate official federal design preferences, or otherwise hinder design freedom; and add bureaucratic hurdles for federal buildings. AIA supports the GSA’s Guiding Principles, and we support freedom in design. Project Planning: Dallas' Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center – Dallas, TX 🏛️ On Jan. 8th Dallas City Council voted to approve contracts to move head with the $3.7 billion overhaul & expansion of the Convention Center. 🏗️ A JV team led by AECOM Hunt, and Turner Construction Company was announced as the contractor, along with 14 other firms. With Perkins&Will being awarded a $141.5 million for architect, engineer, and design services. MoMA Acquires Work of UNM Chair of Architecture Chris Cornelius The Museum of Modern Art recently acquired the work of Chris Cornelius, University of New Mexico Professor of Architecture. This acquisition into the Architecture and Design permanent collection is internationally recognized as highly prestigious. MoMA’s acquisition includes three drawings from his Radio Free Alcatraz project (2014) and one model (2009) titled “Bear,” from a series of models called “Bending Out of Course.” You can view the collected work here. This work is featured in the exhibition Down to Earth opening on November 22, 2024. It will demonstrate “how the design of the built environment can help foster resilient communities, mitigate the devastating impacts of the climate crisis, and re-establish connections between human and nonhuman life.” Dean of the School of Architecture and Planning, Robert González stated of this recognition, “As the first Indigenous person trained as an architect to be in the Architecture and Design collection, Chris Cornelius is a central voice of a new generation of designers in the built environment disciplines who are helping us to reframe our relationship with the land through an Indigenous lens. We’re fortunate to have Cornelius at the helm of our Architecture program in a region poised to lead in this timely reframing.”
