Merchandising is a complex process in the African continent. As Sarah Bohner (Immediate-past Head of Licensing and Retail, FIFA) rightly pointed out, understanding what motivates sports fans to purchase team merchandise is crucial. As sports organizations, we must recognize the challenges of bringing licensed products. Culture and fan loyalty play a pivotal role in the success of a sporting organization's merchandising program. A lot can be learned from #SimbaSportsClub and #YoungAfricansSportsClub about localizing the merchandising business. These Tanzanian clubs follow a merchandising model where they co-design, manufacture from Asia, manage their distribution channels, and reap the profits. Similarly, #OrlandoPiratesFC and #KaizerChiefsFC have their own successful merchandising program. Their kit sponsor manufactures and sponsors the kit for the sports teams, and they use a combination of the club and retail market channels to maximize their profits.
