We held the second session for Cohort 2 of our Future CIO Programme last night, a specialised development programme designed to equip future digital and technology professionals with the skills and capabilities needed to prepare them as they progress towards Chief Information Technology Officer roles. For our second session, we had the privilege of welcoming Simon Hollins, Former Group CIO, Informa Group and Managing Director, Red Raven Consulting, with over 30 years' experience as CIO, for a thought provoking and engaging talk on 'How to engage the business as CIO'. His CIO and leadership advice was invaluable. Some key insights we took away were:
1. The most important thing you need to do to be a successful CIO is build TRUST: Earn the trust of senior board members, executive committee peers, your team, and most importantly, yourself
2. Consider what is the alternative you have to offer that the company does not already have. What can you bring that the person previously in charge could not?
3. Learn everything about the business you are responsible for running. Learn to speak the language, spend as much time as you can with the customers and learn governance.
4. Be known for being great at one or two things.
5. Offer to help and be accountable for things that are outside your area – this is how you’ll build your profile.
This was followed by vibrant evening of networking with cross-industry peers and likeminded people. Up next in the programme, our final session will focus on: "CIO of the Future: Opportunities, trends and challenges".
