With Veterans Day approaching, it is a way for us to honor and express gratitude to all the men and women who served in our armed forces. Many service members are reluctant to talk about their experiences once they return to civilian life. Sometimes the memories are too difficult, and veterans want to shield their families from the pain they experienced. They also might fear the reaction. As heavy as the stories might be, they contain important lessons about the power of sacrifice, camaraderie, and national unity during a difficult time. Here are some questions to begin the conversation. (When asking questions, it's important to be respectful and mindful of potential sensitivities, and ready to listen without judgment.) 1973: 401 veterans serve in Congress, or 75% of both elected chambers 1995: The number has fallen by almost half in two decades, with 213 former service members in the House and Senate. 2013: Fewer than 100 veterans serve in Congress, the fewest it’s ever been. 2022: 97 vets are elected, an increase of 5 from the previous election cycle and only the 4th time in 50 years there has been any increase at all. With the 2024 election season already gearing up, the subject of veterans in Congress raises a number of important questions, including 2 “big-picture” concerns we’d like to hear your thoughts on: 1: How do the historically falling numbers of vets in Congress reflect U.S. military policy at the highest level? Is it inherently risky for large-scale, organizational decisions to be made largely by people who have no firsthand experience in the enterprise which they are administrating? 2: Any examples from your personal service history that might prove or disprove that?
