A new home for Relate. The relationship people are now part of the family charity, Family Action. The national charity Relate was put into administration in late 2024. Family Action has stepped in to keep its services going, from online support, to local shops, to face to face counselling. This means that from 1 January 2025 Relate has a new home with Family Action. The quality of our relationships affects almost every aspect of life – helping us create meaning, helping us cope when times are hard. Whatever family means or looks like for us, it's relationships that matter. We're excited about the shared journey ahead. With Relate at Family Action we can work to support the creation of secure foundations for children and young people, and safe, supportive relationships for all.

Charity—whether through money, food, clothing, or toys—is a vital practice that we should make a regular part of our lives. In Islam, even a simple smile is considered an act of charity. It’s inspiring to see people dedicate their time and effort to something spiritually enriching while supporting those in need. Here are some key takeaways about charity and its significance in Islam. Charity helps alleviate poverty, reduce inequality, and strengthen bonds within the community, fostering a sense of mutual care and responsibility. Islam emphasizes that acts of charity, big or small, are significant in the eyes of Allah, as I said above even a smile can count as charity. In fact , Zakat(charity) is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, requiring Muslims to give a fixed percentage (usually 2.5%) of their wealth annually to help the needy, support social welfare, and promote economic balance. Charity is considered a way to purify one’s wealth and soul, reduce greed, and earn Allah’s blessings and forgiveness. The Qur’an and Hadith frequently promise immense rewards for those who give generously. Ultimately, charity benefits both the giver and the receiver, serving as a powerful means to foster a more just, fair, and compassionate society.
With Christmas fast approaching, I felt inspired to give back to the community in a meaningful way. I therefore personally took the lead in organising Christmas pamper boxes for women and children in refuge at Pennine Domestic Abuse Partnership (PDAP). This involved planning, coordinating donations, and working closely with Deborah from PDAP to ensure we could make a real impact for their clients in need. Our Family Department already work very closely with PDAP who are a key provider of domestic abuse services in Kirklees so it was incredibly rewarding to hear how much this will mean to the families at the refuge. Also, many thanks to the two offices that donated, we successfully gathered enough donations to fill four boxes!

I feel very lucky to work with the hospitality industry. It such a collaborative and fun sector to be involved in. What never ceases to amaze me about those in the industry, is that, despite the widely reported and significant challenges the sector continues to face, they remain committed to regularly coming together to support great causes, whether or not related to hospitality. Last week, Clarke & Son Solicitors again took part in the annual Drinks Trade Regatta, which raised a significant sum for charity. On 6th June we will be taking part in the London Bridge Walk, organised by our friends at Beds and Bars Group. This year, the walk will raise funds for AWARE Scotland. AWARE Scotland is a charity that believe that all children, regardless of their life experience, backgrounds and needs, have the right to happiness and the opportunity to self-develop. They help the most in need to achieve their full potential as valued members of the community. AWARE Scotland provide supported respite breaks focused on physical activity, mental wellbeing, social awareness and fun. Their unique experiences are designed to build confidence and engender lifelong friendships. Their respite care, tailors their activities for the needs of those with additional support requirements, to provide a diverse and inclusive environment for all. I have seen first-hand, the significant difficulties some of my friends face when it comes to finding activities suitable for children with additional needs. With the pandemic and challenging economic conditions, investment into existing and new services is severely depleted. Charities like AWARE Scotland have always played an important role in helping and developing the lives of young people, but their role is becoming increasingly critical to a greater number. Young people today are facing challenges and difficulties we had hoped had been consigned to the past. It has been widely reported that Millennials and Gen Z are likely to be the first generations worse off than their parents. Alarmingly, 2023 statistics showed 30% of children in the UK were living in child poverty and The Resolution Foundation has estimated that, in the short term at least, the number of people in the UK living in absolute poverty will continue to rise, reaching 12 million in 2024/25. Even those not in the direst positions are having to adapt. The sharp increase in cost of living has forced many families to cut back on discretionary spending, including activities and holidays. Looking forward, young people today are faced with increased costs of living and education, higher student and other debt, rents at unprecedented levels and house prices continuing to inflate. I know many of you reading this will have charities and good causes which you support. If you would like to help support this wonderful organisation, any donation, no matter how small, will be appreciated. Plus, I will be stuck with Alex May for the day. Surely that deserves something?
🗓️ On the 6th June, William Anderson and Alex May will join Beds and Bars Group for their Bridge Walk to support Aware Scotland. Aware Scotland believes all young people, regardless of their background, deserve happiness and opportunities for self-development. Their vision is to help those in need achieve their full potential through supported respite breaks and days out focused on physical activity, mental well-being, and fun. World Suicide Prevention Day serves as a powerful reminder of the urgent need to make suicide awareness, prevention, and support an integral part of your workplace's mental health strategy. It’s deeply concerning that fewer employees feel their workplace has a strategy in place compared to last year. Now, more than ever, it’s essential to show that support is available. #WSPD24 #SuicidePrevention #WorkplaceWellbeing #MentalHealthSupport
Today is #WorldSuicidePreventionDay - A reminder that we can all play a part in saving lives.
