Family Action’s Post

We were honoured to have our Head of Insight and Influencing, Stacey Warren, speak at the launch event for the APPG for Parents. Thank you to Nicola Martin for Parentkind, who coordinated the event. It was encouraging to have so many people attend to discuss the impact of poverty on parents and their families. We're hopeful that this new APPG will help parents to share their experiences and views on how to address their needs in the UK today.

On Monday, we hosted our first APPG of 2025. We brought together Parliamentarians, leading experts, and key stakeholders to address the critical issue of parent poverty in the UK. The event, attended by 54 participants, including 10 MPs and Peers, highlighted the urgent need for action and the importance of incorporating parent voices into policy solutions.   Chaired by Sharon Hodgson MP, the panel explored the harsh realities faced by parents, including the escalating cost of raising a child, the financial pressures of education, and the impact of poverty on mental health and relationships. The discussion underscored the vital role of organisations like Family Action, The Centre for Emotional Health, Trussell, and Child Poverty Action Group UK in supporting families and advocating for change.   Key takeaways from the event included: 🔴 Poverty is a long-term issue affecting families, not just a result of the cost of living or the pandemic. 🔴 Poverty has a detrimental effect on parental mental health and family relationships. 🔴 Parents' voices are often overlooked in policy discussions, despite their unique insights and experiences. 🔴 Food bank use continues to rise 🔴 There are hidden costs in sending a child to school.   Parentkind presented findings from our National Parent Survey, providing further evidence of the challenges faced by parents. We are committed to ensuring that the voices of parents are central to the ongoing inquiry into poverty.   At the event, we launched the APPG’s Inquiry into Parent Poverty. You can play a role in the inquiry by responding to our call for evidence: https://lnkd.in/geRqW6cP
