Honestly, can we trust the numbers? 🧮 In this video, we’re exploring point-in-time (PIT) counts - an attempt to determine the number of people experiencing homelessness on a single night over the entire state of California. We’re examining data the counts have provided over the years, looking at how the PIT counts work and why they might not be as optimised and accurate as they could be (yet!). The script was largely based on our blog post “New Counts of Homelessness and More YIMBY vs NIMBY” by Rohan Montgomery. I had the pleasure of producing this short and sweet episode of Let's Talk Poverty with Jill Pable hosted by Lee Stevens. Some key highlights that really stand out about the importance of building with a trauma informed lens are: 🔨 The built environment is a reflection of our values and priorities. It needs to be an active listener to the needs of the people within it. 🔨 There's a misconception that when shelter spaces are "too nice" that people won't want to leave. In fact, people want to transition out of transient spaces like a shelter, there is simply a lack of affordable housing. 🔨 Daytime spaces are vital for those experiencing homelessness for a variety of reasons: they provide essential services, they provide a space to build community and they reduce the friction that occurs when there is a lack of daytime spaces and other built environments end up being used for unintended purposes. 🔨 We can't simply detract from make our built environment to reduce crime, there need to be additive measures such as better lighting or public art to increase subtle cues that those spaces are built for everyone for specific purposes.
In this episode of #letstalkpoverty, Lee Stevens connects with Jill Pable, a professor at Florida State University and creator of the non-profit, Design Resources for Homelessness, to discuss trauma informed design principles for homelessness. Listen here: https://lnkd.in/gVHDS2eu

You can start to make a difference today. Educate yourself on the issues and share what you’ve learned with your friends and family. Understand that people don’t choose to be homeless. Circumstances beyond their control, for a variety of reasons, have brought them to this way of life. If you’re comfortable, smile and say hi to the homeless person you often see on the corner, or on your way to work. Make eye contact if you can and say a few words to acknowledge and reaffirm their humanity. Most importantly, we can make a difference together. Please give the largest and most meaningful gift you can that reflects your values and your desire to join CUCS as part of the solution to homelessness. cucs.org/donate. #cucsnyc #homelessnyc #supportivehousing #makeadifferencedecember #transitionalhousing

Donating to support widows can have a profound impact for several reasons: 1. **Economic Stability**: Widows often face significant financial hardships, especially in regions where women have limited access to economic resources and opportunities. Your support can help them achieve economic stability. 2. **Education and Empowerment**: Donations can fund educational programs, vocational training, and other initiatives that empower widows to become self-sufficient and improve their quality of life. 3. **Mental and Emotional Support**: Losing a spouse can be emotionally devastating. Charities and organizations often provide counseling and community support, which can be crucial for mental well-being. 4. **Social Justice**: In many cultures, widows may face discrimination and social exclusion. Supporting them can help fight against these injustices and promote equality. 5. **Community Development**: Helping widows can have a ripple effect, benefiting their children and communities by fostering a more stable and inclusive environment. 6. **Humanitarian Compassion**: Donating is an act of compassion and solidarity, showing that you care about the well-being of those who are vulnerable and in need of support.

This week we are acknowledging Homelessness Week at Star to drive awareness of the impact of homelessness in our community. A big focus of this week is our Op Shop Fundraiser, with all proceeds raised going towards Sacred Heart Mission’s Women’s House. We are asking each student to donate two items of quality clothing, or one item of clothing and a warm blanket to support this initiative. These items are to be given to students' mentor teachers. We are aiming to conclude the donation drive on Monday July 29th. Alternatively you can donate directly to Sacred Heart Mission’s programs via their website: https://lnkd.in/gBmju-gY Domestic and family violence is the leading cause of homelessness for women, with 45% of all women and girls seeking assistance identifying family and domestic violence as a cause. In fact, 2 in 5 women (39%) have experienced violence since the age of 15. What these devastating statistics don’t tell us however, is how many women are slipping through service gaps. Since 2012-2023, the number of women and children experiencing homelessness has doubled. The Women’s House is a sanctuary for women in crisis. It is a safe space where they can share their experiences and receive person-centred, specific support.

As the snow falls outside, let's take a moment to reflect on the stark reality faced by those experiencing homelessness during this winter storm. For many, preparing for a snowstorm means securing shelter, warmth, and provisions. But for those without homes, it's a chilling struggle for survival against the elements. Each snowflake serves as a reminder of the biting cold and the constant battle for warmth. The latest statistics show that the homeless rate is expected to rise for the third year in a row. Despite efforts, the number of individuals facing homelessness continues to increase, exacerbated by the ongoing effects of the pandemic and rising living costs. As you cozy up indoors, consider the impact you can make in the lives of those less fortunate. Your donations can provide vital support to our Homeless Outreach Team, enabling them to connect vulnerable individuals with essential resources, offering shelter, compassion, and dignity. Following a tragedy, we often ask ourselves, 'What can we do to prevent this in the future?' Last week was nothing short of tragic. But we are not helpless. We can: ✅volunteer as a mediator or mentor ✅engage youth & families in our community ✅advocate for gun safety policies ✅donate to organizations supporting youth & families, and more. It's up to each of us. What will you do? #PreventGunViolence #TakeAction 🔗 https://lnkd.in/e2iWvPGh

Did you know that over 38,000 young people aged 15–24 years presented alone to a homelessness service in 2022–23? Of these young people, almost half experienced mental ill-health, and over one-third experienced domestic and family violence. Most of these young people needed short- or long-term accommodation, and most were turned away due to a lack of capacity. These statistics only scratch the surface of issues that young people experiencing homelessness face. To have statistics like this in a country like Australia is not acceptable; together, we can have a tangible impact, and now is the time to act. #wehavetodobetter #YHMD
