History in the making! The BCAS successfully convened the Global Strategic Litigation and Advocacy event during the third session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on People of African Descent. The event, held in Geneva on April 16, 2024, brought together an international cadre of lawyers, academics, activists and other civil society actors from 20 countries, culminating in the announcement of the Global Strategic Litigation and Advocacy Network. The network aims to champion systemic change through legal avenues to secure reparations and promote equity for people of African descent worldwide. “After a decade, our persistent calls for reparations continue to be overlooked. The old ways of requesting reparations have not worked. It is not enough to ask those who oppress us to right their wrongs; we must demand it, enforce it through the power of strategic litigation paired with relentless advocacy” Nicholas Marcus Thompson CEO, BCAS. Interested individuals and organizations around the world can join the network here: https://lnkd.in/eAtTbsag Learn more https://lnkd.in/epyBvFzw

American Bar Association, Family Justice Initiative Webinar Series Anti-Racist Lawyering in Practice October 22, 2024 | 3PM EST How can the legal community recognize and incorporate anti-racist practices inside and out of the courtroom? How can legal advocates challenge racism and inequity? If we do not take action, are we complicit? Raising issues of racism can be difficult, but is nonetheless imperative. How can counsel for all parties raise race and other equity issues for their clients? What is the best strategy for briefing this issue before the court, addressing it in policy meetings, and learning to identify, reflect upon and change one’s biases? In this presentation, attendees will learn about FJI’s Anti-Racist Lawyering Initiatives, explore how to implement strategies to confront racism, beginning with initial client conversations throughout each stage of a case. We will also explore how centering issues of racism is an effective practice in preventing unnecessary removals of children from their families. Speakers will include Phyllis Stricklan, Leslie Heimov, Amelia Watson and Jey Rajaraman. Please register here - https://lnkd.in/gsEBW46c https://lnkd.in/gr3DS5gU

Principal Attorney at Yolanda L. Taylor Law Firm, PLLC d/b/a The Center for Community Law & Equity, Adjunct Professor of Law at Wake Forest Law School, Policy Advocate, Equity Strategist, Speaker, and Community Lawyer.
Teaching future lawyers to be community champions brings me immense joy! 🎓 At Wake Forest University School of Law we empower our students to become more than just legal professionals – we mold them into community lawyers. What does that mean? It means equipping them with the tools to use their legal expertise, research, and advocacy skills to uplift communities. They’re not just defenders of the law; they’re allies in the fight against injustice. From supporting grassroots campaigns to guiding community movements, our students learn to amplify voices, challenge unjust systems, and empower individuals to engage in local governance. Every lesson, every discussion, and every case study is a step towards nurturing compassionate, effective advocates who make a tangible difference in people’s lives. Teaching future lawyers isn’t just about shaping legal minds; it’s about fostering agents of change who are committed to making our communities stronger, fairer, and more resilient. 🌟 #CommunityLawyers #SocialJustice #Empowerment 🏛️

What is the alignment between restorative justice practices and some key conservative principles? (Short-answer: There is a lot of alignment, and you can read about it here.) I find this new policy paper -- brought into existence by some of my Annie E. Casey Foundation colleagues and their grantee at R Street Institute -- to be valuable.

Eliza Burton "Lyda" Conley was a remarkable Wyandot woman who paved the way for Native American women in law. After graduating from the Kansas City School of Law, Lyda Conley became the first woman to be admitted to the Kansas Bar Association. Throughout her legal career, she fought tirelessly to protect the Huron Cemetery, now the Wyandot National Burying Ground. In doing so, Lyda Conley became the first Native American woman to argue a case before the United States Supreme Court. This case served as a precedent for the protection of Native American burying grounds. It was the first case in which the plaintiff argued that the burying grounds of Native Americans were entitled to federal protection. Through her advocacy, Conley gained the support of Kansas Senator Charles Curtis, who belonged to the Kaw Nation. Senator Curtis proposed and led the passage of legislation in 1916 which prevented the sale of the Huron Cemetery and established the land as a federal park. The Huron Cemetery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971, and in 2016, it was designated a National Historic Landmark. Through her unwavering dedication to advocating for tribal sovereignty, protecting tribal lands and legal achievements, Lyda Conley has inspired Native women to pursue legal careers. #LydaConley #NativeAmericanLawyer #TribalSovereignty #NativeAmericanRights #LegalAdvocacy #WomenInLaw #WomensHistoryMonth
