Attention: Former Special Needs Opportunity Scholarship Students. Students who have previously received a scholarship from Children First Education Fund will continue to be funded in the 2024-25 school year, but these students are required to update their eligibility information. They can do so by going into the parent portal and updating their financial information (and disability verification information, if necessary). This will help CFEF determine the scholarship award amount for next year. #CFEfund #educationaladvocacy #scholarship #bettereducation

Check out our most recent article regarding the effects of socioeconomic gaps in the college application process! 🏆 2022 Gamechangers - Top 10 under 40 - Athens Area Chamber of Commerce 🏆 Howard B. Stroud Community Service Award - Foundation for Excellence in Public Education | Athens, GA
Title I stands as a transformative force with the potential to significantly alter the educational landscape for countless students. At its essence, Title I acknowledges the existence of students who require extra support to overcome barriers such as food insecurity, homelessness, and limited access to essential resources. By allocating funds to schools, Title I facilitates the provision of enhanced educational opportunities, thereby increasing the likelihood of academic achievement for these students. However, the success of Title I's framework is contingent upon the establishment of a robust foundation centered on Family and Community Engagement. Without a deep and meaningful commitment to engaging families, the impact of Title I funds risks being superficial at best. When implemented with dedication and integrity, Title I emerges as a formidable catalyst for change, significantly advancing the educational outcomes of thousands of students and reshaping their futures. #TitleI #familyengagement #communityengagement

Reflecting on the Challenges of the FAFSA Process for Immigrant Families The Teen Vogue article titled "FAFSA Glitch Creates Chaos for College Applicants With Undocumented Parents" shed light on the significant hurdles students encounter while navigating the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) process. It is a particularly interesting article as it delves into another dimension of the financial aid struggle that some may not have considered, highlighting the unique challenges faced by students with undocumented parents. It's evident that more comprehensive reforms and institutional support are needed to streamline the FAFSA process and ensure equitable access to higher education for all students, regardless of their background or circumstances. I particularly commend Teen Vogue for covering this issue, as their rebranding since 2015 demonstrates a commitment to addressing pressing social issues and amplifying the voices of marginalized communities. Turning Data and Information into Insights and Inspiration | Serves on National Boards and Committees | Author - "Protecting the Places We Love"
Check out this new application that my friend and colleague Justin M. Madron and collaborators just released that showcases how policy has shaped segregation and unequal educational opportunity in America. Where are the 100 most segregated school district borders in the U.S. that drive higher poverty rates for students? Check out the #map and statistics in this app. This work builds on the #redlining project Justin worked on while at the University of Richmond and integrates many new data points. "School district boundaries don’t just define the area where a certain group of children attends a given set of schools. They also determine the local taxing jurisdiction that supports those schools. About 30 percent of the average school district’s funding comes from local property taxes, and that figure can be much higher in property-wealthy districts. Big differences in property value can lead to large funding gaps, even between districts that are right next to one another." There is a full report, you can download the #data and #gisdata and access the digital mapping application. #gis #socialequity #sovereignty #education #policy POLITICO New America Lincoln Institute of Land Policy

Recent data reveals a stark disparity in higher education: only 16% of community college transfers complete a four-year degree, with even lower completion rates for Black (9%), Latino (13%), and low-income (11%) students. Are there barriers in the transfer system? You bet your degree it is! The transfer process is fraught with obstacles, often due to insufficient collaboration between community colleges and universities. This lack of clarity and support disproportionately affects students from marginalized communities who already face systemic challenges in accessing higher education. The Need for Inclusive Practices To combat these disparities, fostering a sense of belonging on campus and implementing practices like dual enrollment are essential. These steps can significantly enhance transfer completion rates and promote economic mobility. Actively engaging students from low-income backgrounds, providing resources like counseling programs and household essentials to support their academic journey (supportive services). It's time to reimagine our approach to ensuring equitable access to higher education for all. #EquitableEducation #HigherEdAccess #CommunityCollegeSuccess New Data Reveals Few Community College Transfers Complete a Bachelor’s Degree – The 74 (the74million.org)
