A few weeks ago, our insights team completed CUES training, which was delivered by @newcastleuni , the institution leading the research on the program. The Coping with Uncertainty in Everyday Situations (CUES) program is an intervention designed to address anxiety related to uncertainty in autistic children. CUES is based on research highlighting the role of “intolerance of uncertainty” in the anxiety experienced by autistic children. Funded by the Children’s Foundation, CUES uses a parent-based intervention rooted in CBT principles. Parents participate in eight weekly sessions, learning strategies to help their children develop a more flexible approach to uncertainty. Embracing neurodiversity in social skills 🧠 🌈 ♾️ Neurodiversity affirming practice celebrates the unique contributions of neurodivergent individuals. It advocates for the acceptance of different social norms and communication styles, rather than imposing neurotypical standards on neurodivergent children. This approach emphasises mutual understanding: 1. Inclusive Education: Teach all students about diverse communication and socialisation methods. 2: Shared Responsibility: Remove the burden of effective social interaction from solely neurodivergent individuals. 3. World Dyslexia Awareness Day is observed annually on 8th October, as part of the British Dyslexia Association's Dyslexia Awareness Week (7–13 October). Dyslexia is a lifelong Specific Learning Difficulty (SpLD). It affects individuals of all genders, ethnicities, and social groups and is not connected to intellectual ability. It is estimated that 3.3 million adults in the UK workplace are dyslexic, many of whom are undiagnosed. It is important to recognise the many strengths associated with dyslexia and dyslexic thinking in the workplace, for example creativity, problem solving and visual thinking. When impacts are experienced, for example with information processing, often simple adjustments in the workplace can have a positive impact on dyslexic individuals. The Moment That Made It All Worth It❤️ As a therapist and special education teacher, there are many challenges. Progress can feel painstakingly slow. 👀 But then there are those precious moments that make the hard work worth it - like the first time a parent told me "Thank you, I never believed my child could do this."🫂 It was during an IEP meeting for a young student with autism who had been completely non-verbal when he started in my classroom at age 6. He struggled immensely with communication, social skills, and severe meltdowns. ❤️ His parents had lost hope he would ever converse, make friends, or be integrated into a general ed class.📈 But through interventions like ABA, visual supports, and intensive communication training, he slowly started making breakthroughs. 😊 After two years of hard work from the whole team, he could converse in full sentences, play with peers, and handle transitions.📈 In that meeting celebrating his achievements, his mom turned to me with tears in her eyes and uttered those words I'll never forget: "Thank you. I never believed he could do this." In that moment, every struggle melted away. 😀 This is why I do this work - to help children defy expectations, give families hope, and unlock incredible potential. Teachers undoubtedly strive to cultivate a nurturing and empathetic classroom environment that promotes a sense of belonging. However, it is essential to acknowledge that the “opposite to belonging is rejection” (Horne- Shuttleworth et al., 2024) Let’s take a moment to explore the complexities of rejection in childhood to better appreciate the importance of belonging. Rejection, which may manifest as exclusion through forms like physical or relational bullying can profoundly affect an individuals mental health. Children and adolescents, who primarily learn through observation are adept at recognising and highlighting differences. As their frontal lobes- responsible for decision-making and complex reasoning continue to develop, they often depend on emotional responses to navigate their surroundings. Since expressing emotions has been crucial for meeting their needs and adapting their behavior from birth, they face significant challenges in effectively integrating logic, and emotion when managing interpersonal and peer interactions. This difficulty can lead to internalised feelings and the formation of negative self-beliefs. For instance if a child experiences rejection and adopts the belief, “I’m not good enough,” there is a strong chance that this belief will be reinforced by subsequent experiences of rejection. Such beliefs cannot only signal the onset of mental health challenges, but may also persist into adulthood. Inclusive education aims to ensure that all students have equal opportunities, respective of their abilities.
