Highlighting three recent grantees who are making a significant impact in our region by improving access to healthy meals for underserved populations. **Moveable Feast** delivers medically-tailored meals to Maryland residents living with HIV/AIDS, cancer, and other life-threatening illnesses. They are expanding their refrigeration system to be able to increase the number of meals they can provide, from 9,200 to 10,800 meals a day.  St. Vincent de Paul of Baltimore’s **Good Harvest Community Kitchen**, is fighting food insecurity by partnering with community-based agencies to deliver over 5,000 nutritious meals daily to low-income children, adults, and seniors. They are purchasing vehicles (instead of entering into costly new long-term leases), in order to reduce costs and strengthen their program financially and operationally. **Maryland Food Bank’s** extensive network of soup kitchens, pantries, and schools distributes food to some of the most food-insecure regions in Maryland. As they scale operations, they're advancing their technology infrastructure to strengthen partnerships, automate routine tasks, and expand their reach even further. It isn't often I put my #eatingdisorders and #weightstigmaprevention hat on these days, but if there was ever a reason... As a professional communicator, I usually address issues from the perspective that people are unaware of critical information and need additional data. Well, if that's the case, this excellent post by Ted Kyle of ConscienHealth is a good place to start. Beyond that, though, my thoughts might be helpful to others who don't see the misalignment in the assumption that 'less food = fewer children with obesity.' Let's see if we can get behind a few facts here: 🧨 First, starving children doesn't solve anything. It's simply inhumane. 🧨 Second, removing money from cash-strapped households does not improve the quality of the food consumed. It REDUCES that quality because foods high in nutrition are often more expensive. 🧨 Third, families across the country are struggling financially. This is no secret. The message is shaping elections and campaigns at this very moment. Just Google "families are struggling" and you immediately get the auto pop "...to put food on the table" and ~59 million results show up. So regardless of motive (politics, re-election, concern over body size...), declining funding to assist families with food and defray costs for basic needs, speaks to one's character. It lacks compassion, empathy, strategic planning, and leadership. It is both privilege at it's worst and incredibly unwise. It also ensures outcomes that are directly opposed to the supposed goal of healthy kids. Feeding America released its annual Map the Meal Gap study today, showing a sharp increase in the number of food insecure Delawareans in 2022. These numbers are a clear indicator of what we have been seeing on the ground - more people are turning to us for food help. We are addressing these needs by providing the food people need to thrive TODAY, but also addressing long-term solutions by providing food for TOMORROW through workforce development, financial coaching, benefits outreach and nutrition education. A snapshot of food insecurity here in Delaware: 125,370 individuals were food insecure - 1 in 8 Delawareans (12.6% of the population) 40,620 children were food insecure - 1 in 5 Delaware children (19.7% of the population) New Castle County 12% of the population was food insecure (68,260 individuals) 18.3% of the child population was food insecure (22,280 kids) Kent County 13.7% of the population was food insecure (25,060 individuals) 22.9% of the child population was food insecure (9,540 kids) Sussex County 13.3% of the population was food insecure (32,050 individuals) 20.2% of the population was food insecure (8,800 kids) Learn how you can get involved in our movement to end hunger by visiting www.fbd.org/get-involved.

I've approached the problem of what it is we want from the direct route, asking what it is we want. I feel this direct route has yielded a few important leads, and will return to this route, shortly. I am going to, not to digress, or get twisted, and definitely not to get my panties into a twist, try this other route, What is it "We" do NOT want... What is it "We" do NOT want, extremely do NOT want, do NOT want, do NOT want, with extreme prejudice? What do we not want with extreme prejudice, and would, without hesitation or doubt, send the CIA in to intercept and then do an extreme rendition on, in a psyop, a detention center, a concentration camp, an Abu Graib, a Guantanamo, or basement of the White House? Or Grenada, or Haiti, now that Papa Doc and Baby Doc are, in the colloquial, "gone, baby, gone". (Papa Doc was an Obstetrician?) Oh yeah! The Falklands! This is, I have been biased in believing, the easier question. We do not want murder and mayhem. We don't want genocide. We don't want plagues or pandemics. We don't want acne or yeast infections. We don't want birth defects. (I pause here on us not wanting birth defects. Do you guys remember the March of Dimes? Probably you do not. You guys probably don't remember polio, either. There's no reason you should, except to remember all in all, Americans are not losers and they are not opposed to the well being, or should I say, general welfare. General welfare-- flash on FDR. Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Who is on the dime? FDR. Who had polio? FDR. Why is FDR on the dime and why was there a March of Dimes? I'm going to parenthetically conclude now... One of the last times we decisively identified what "We" didn't want and righteously stomped it out once and for all was with FDR. The guy, the Prez, most readily identified with our preambles, " PREMOTE THE gENERAL WELFARE" !!!

It was Friday, December 17th, 2021—exactly two years and six months ago today—that God planted the seed of Brown Babee in my spirit, though at the time I understood it as Brown Baby. But I am certain now that it was always meant to be Brown Babee. Just three months prior, my daughter Chancellor was diagnosed with eczema. We made changes to her formula, laundry soap, and other products to address the root causes. Concerned about the side effects of prescription creams containing steroids, which force the immune system into submission, I knew that natural solutions were the only option. While there is no single cause for eczema, an overactive immune system plays a significant role in atopic dermatitis, commonly known as eczema. This condition arises from the immune system's hyperactivity, often triggered by genetic, environmental, seasonal, dietary allergens, or stress factors. In my daughter's case, it is both hereditary and allergy-related. As a mom, I initially set out to find clean products that could soothe her sensitive skin. But I was soon left disappointed by the lack of suitable options on the market. Frustrated by not being able to help my child, I surrendered as I often do by way of prayer to a higher power, resulting in the immediate download of Brown Babee on the morning of Friday, December 17th, 2021. I've heard it said that a God idea is seldom a small one. This post isn't about recounting how the idea has unfolded or how much it has grown over the last two and a half years. Instead, it's an invitation to follow us through what may be lows and no’s as we continue to plant seeds of faith on this journey to the yes’s and successes. That’s what we need to start recognizing that’s coming food. And that’s part of Bill Gates’s plan – to have us eating insects and chemical food. That’s what he did to Africa with the green revolution that has put 30 million extra people into food insecurity, and we don’t need them to do it here."

The researchers observed an increase in food insecurity among U.S. families with older adults, from 12.5 to 23.1 percent in 1999–2003 to 2015–2019. There was more than a doubling seen in the rates of recurring food insecurity (5.6 to 12.6 percent) and more than a tripling in the rates of chronic food insecurity (2.0 to 6.3 percent). Higher food insecurity rates persisted among Black and Hispanic families, those with lower socioeconomic status, and those participating in the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, across both time periods.
