As per a recent food security assessment conducted by specialists from 16 UN agencies and non-governmental organizations, there is a possibility of famine in Gaza this winter unless the violence ceases and more humanitarian help reaches people. According to the study, a year of conflict has significantly hampered humanitarian and commercial supply routes, destroyed livelihoods, and drastically decreased food production.

Alarming news from the 2024 Global Report on Food Crises, published today.    - 281 million people worldwide are affected by food crises.    - Armed conflicts are the major driver of food insecurity, followed by economic shocks and weather extremes.    - The food crisis in Gaza is the worst ever recorded with an Integrated food security Phase Classification (IPC) analysis. As from March 2024, half of the population is projected in a state of catastrophe (IPC Phase 5).   - The food crisis in Sudan was worsened by the conflict started in April 2023, resulting in 20.3 million people facing high levels of acute food insecurity.    - Over 50% of people projected to experience high levels of acute food insecurity in 2024 are in countries going through armed conflicts: DRC, Nigeria, Sudan, Ethiopia, Yemen, and Myanmar.    The report is published every year by the Global Network Against Food Crises, a coalition including the European Commission, FAO, International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), World Food Programme, UNICEF and other development and humanitarian organisations. According to a report published by the Global Network Against Food Crises, the number of people facing or at risk of extreme food insecurity has surged to 1.9 million in 2024, more than doubling since last year. The Gaza Strip and Sudan are among the most severely affected regions, with Gaza experiencing its worst food crisis on record, where half of the population is now in the "Catastrophe" category, facing extreme food shortages and a heightened risk of malnutrition and death.  PAM is deeply committed to advancing global food security and addressing urgent crises in partnership with key international organizations such as FAO, and its own Centre for Global Studies - CGS, in SanMarino. In the case of humans, overpopulation is a concern that the world's population may become too large for its resources and environment to sustain in the long term. This can lead to environmental degradation, a lower quality of life, or population crashes. 8,124,160,505 Humans on Earth has made the Earth very unsustainable. According to a March 2024 report by the Global Report on Food Crises (GRFC), up to 208.3 million people in 41 countries and territories could experience high levels of acute food insecurity in 2024. The report attributes this to prolonged food crises caused by armed conflicts, with over half of those projected to experience food insecurity living in DRC, Nigeria, Sudan, Ethiopia, Yemen, and Myanmar.

East Africa. According to Global Report on Food Crises 2023: 🌤 Weather extremes such as unprecedented drought in the Horn of Africa (including parts of Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia) and unfavourable weather conditions in parts of Burundi and Uganda, remained the main drivers of acute food insecurity in the region. 💰 Economic shocks such as soaring food prices amid slow economic growth were a major factor constraining access to food. To combat food insecurity, sustainable agricultural practices, improved water management, and economic strategies like stabilizing food prices and stimulating growth are crucial. Immediate action must combine emergency relief with the restoration of local food production

In conflict-affected areas, the interconnection of risks – weather extremes, economic shocks, public health crises – often exacerbates the humanitarian crisis, making recovery more difficult and prolonging instability. When combined with environmental shocks, such as droughts or floods, the situation can rapidly deteriorate. The Impact of Conflict on Food Security in Syria: A Long Road to Recovery The Syrian conflict, which began in 2011, has devastated the nation's food security, pushing millions into severe poverty and food insecurity. Before the war, Syria was a key agricultural hub in the Middle East, producing vast quantities of wheat, fruits, and vegetables. However, the ongoing conflict has destroyed agricultural infrastructure, caused a dramatic decline in food production, and skyrocketed food prices. The agricultural sector, once thriving with 1.5 million hectares of cultivated land, has seen losses such as a 55% decrease in fruit production and a 60% reduction in vegetables. Not only has farming become nearly impossible due to land contamination from constant shelling, but the destruction of essential services like irrigation systems has exacerbated the crisis. With a rapidly increasing population and a devalued currency, access to basic food supplies has become an insurmountable challenge for many Syrians. The government's blockades have compounded the humanitarian crisis by preventing aid from reaching besieged areas. This has left citizens with limited access to food, water, and medical supplies, with many resorting to extreme measures to survive. The economic sanctions and the collapse of Syria’s infrastructure have contributed to soaring food prices, making even basic goods unaffordable for most families. The road to rebuilding Syria’s food security is long and requires international cooperation. Restoring agriculture, improving food distribution systems, and investing in sustainable farming practices are essential steps to reviving Syria’s economy and ensuring access to nutritious food for all Syrians. However, the long-term success of these efforts hinges on the restoration of stability and peace in the region. Food security is not just about availability—it’s about ensuring that people can afford and access food without fear of violence.
