Hey! Those of you interested in professional philanthropy, have you heard about the new Executive Director Institute for philanthropy leaders who want to learn the ins and outs of running a philanthropic endeavor, whether a private foundation, DAF, LLC or other form? Sharon Schneider, and colleagues, have mined their 40+ years of experience to develop a 3-month curriculum covering the basics that no one seems to teach anymore - compliance, taxes and accounting, running a board meeting, due diligence - plus using innovative tools like PRIs, recoverable grants, direct charitable activities, and more. I thought there might be some folks out there who might benefit from this cohort-based program. Maybe an emerging philanthropist who is looking to step into a role leading the family philanthropy, or a family who recently hired someone? The person's title is not the important thing, just the idea that they are looking to get up to speed. I sure wish I had a class like this when I was starting out. Yesterday was a sad day as Getting On Board announced its closure. I’ve been lucky to work with the charity for 7½ years and have learnt so much from my fellow associates (who are so knowledgeable and lovely, just a downright brilliant bunch!) and the many people I’ve met through our training and workshops.  I wrote two of Getting on Board’s guides and they’re two of the things I’m most proud of in a nearly-20-year career. I’ve never come across an organisation quite like Getting on Board – relatable, practical, non-judgmental - it just got stuff done! (Largely due to the phenomenal but down-to-earth Penny Wilson. I think we achieved a lot in our mission to change the face of trusteeship. But the mission isn’t accomplished yet. So it’s over to you – fellow trustees, charity execs, and professional advisers. Keep advertising for trustees, giving them great inductions and supporting them to give you their best. Some final thoughts to remember: · White, middle-class, middle-aged, professionally educated men make great trustees but so do other people. Let’s keep adding more to the mix! · Diverse boards that aren’t inclusive can be damaging for both individuals and the organisation. It takes intention and humility to recognise that your ways of doing things might be inadvertently excluding people, and courage to learn a different approach. But it’s absolutely achievable! · Building a sense of belonging where the board sees that each person has something worth saying and makes space to hear it is gold. It brings insight, constructive challenge, creativity and inspiration. Who doesn’t want that?!
