We're looking for a great Full Stack Engineer to join my team at Farewill to work on our award winning wills product along with helping us build industry leading internal tooling for our customer-facing teams.
If you think you know someone who might be a great fit please let me know or point them to the job listing: https://lnkd.in/eTQ7_jC5.
Thanks 🙏
We're looking for someone with experience across a React/Typescript/Next.js/Tailwind stack to help us architect and implement our frontend codebase.
I'm hoping for a few things from applicants:
1. Autonomy. We're a growing team. We need people to be able to share the load in terms of maintenance tasks and feature development. That capacity has to be multi-talented and self-directed. If you already know how to discuss technical requirements, give feedback to product teams, write technical documentation, perform and receive code reviews, and manage personal tasks, then you might be the person that we're looking for.
2. Experience. We want people who have used certain technologies long enough to have opinions on the right and wrong ways to do things. We want people who've already found some of the sharp edges or gone underneath the surface of the tools that they're using. We thrive on pairing and discussion. If you like talking code as much as we do and have the knowledge and experience to help shape our technical roadmap, I'd like to talk to you.
3. Curiosity. Our team is small enough that we often need to wear many hats. I don't need someone who is an expert on CI/CD systems to join me. But I would like to see someone interested enough in the Software Development Lifecycle that they want to learn and have their hand in it. We've already set up our infrastructure, but I'd love to work with someone who's actively interested in network topologies and willing to share that knowledge. We write our own SQL queries, so I hope for someone that can author rudimentary queries but with the desire to improve. If you've ever used a React hook and wondered "How does `useState` actually work?", then I'd like to explore it with you.
In return, I'm happy to commit to supporting our future engineer so that they grow in their role with us. I want this to be an excellent opportunity to do work that you can be proud of while also growing your knowledge of modern web apps and networks in both breadth and depth.
***
I also don't want anyone to read the job description and immediately self-select out of it because they don't meet all of the requirements. I don't want a lot of people who would otherwise be wonderful additions to my team decide not to apply because they use Vue instead of React or they aren't confident in their AWS expertise. If you're reading this and on the fence, I ask that you are both realistic and generous to yourself.

Are full-stack engineers as good as specialized developers?
The software engineering field is constantly evolving, and even the best can struggle to stay up to date. A specialist has one task: to amass extensive knowledge about a specific topic.
🍃 It is bold to assume that someone attempting to do two jobs would be even half as good as a specialist who has spent their entire career focusing solely on that topic.
Despite the cost of hiring additional specialists, it will be cheaper in the long run as they won't have to constantly resist old code to ensure it functions with new features and security compliance.
🚧 Relying on full-stack developers can be acceptable, but typically they work best building MVPs and prototypes that will be discarded after project approval or funding is secured.
Our Founder and CEO, Jeremy D., possesses over 17 years of experience and has witnessed firsthand the repercussions of companies attempting to save costs by only hiring full-stack developers.
You can read his comprehensive thoughts on full-stack development teams here: https://loom.ly/NcRBoew#7Factor#SoftwareEngineering#SoftwareEngineer#FullStack#FrontEnd#BackEnd#Developer#Engineer
It seems like most software development posts are looking for 2-8 years of experience in a tiny slice of the industry, such as full stack developer (web dev) or python careerist. Even a middleman, crossover, who says they're looking for top candidates, has positions of this type.
I'm sure they have good reasons for posting applications like this, but it's the opposite of what you want to do if you want to fish for top candidates or breadth of experience, as time does not correlate well with skill or raw talent, and breadth requires walking between roles.
I could definitely use more insight in this to help with job searching.
With a lot of passion that I have towards my job, I prepared this video for my software engineer network. 👨💻
Remember, every line of code you write, every bug you squash, and every problem you solve is a step forward in your journey to greatness. 💪
Keep going! 🚀

Why might a backend developer receive higher comp than a full-stack developer?
I sat down to talk with John Vandivier of Ladderly io and he had this to say:
- Full stack developers can handle both back end and front end development, and can integrate between the two.
- In tier 2 and tier 3 companies, there is a higher proportion of full stack developers or front end developers.
So what's the missing piece of the puzzle?
Specialization.
Specialization is the reason why companies might choose to pay more for a backend developer rather than a full stack developer who can do everything. Specialized roles have higher productivity (in their area of specialization) and can bring more value to a company when working as part of a team.
Companies need to be positioned where they can afford to hire for specialization though, which is generally why this pattern may not be consistent across all ranges of companies.
What are your thoughts on specialization vs full-stack?

When I think of a #FullStackSoftwareDeveloper, it means delivering #idempotent code across the #Backend, #MiddleEnd, #Frontend, and #TestEnd layers. It also means extending #OpenSource software, understanding any code, good or bad, and addressing real business needs. I often ask developers to design a frontend #Component from scratch—it’s not about the #Framework, but about solving problems.
Here’s an example of a custom #Quasar table component ( #CQTable ) that extends the standard table with custom #Resizing and #ColumnPositioning features: https://lnkd.in/d4F6n5A8.
