Incredible announcement by Daimler and PACCAR. A new joint venture that will build enough battery packs for 40,000 trucks a year. That's an enormous amount of deisel saved. The total lack of price increases in raw lithium is perhaps the story of the year. New demand for grids, cars and power tools has exploded, yet prices remain stable, if not are actually dropping. #HydrogenforMobility. Daimler Truck AG will deploy its GenH2 hydrogen trucks to their first customer fleets in 🇩🇪 Germany, including Amazon, Holcim, and Air Products. Amazon is undertaking multiple initiatives to decarbonize its transportation sector. In 2019, it purchased 100,000 electric vans from Rivian to electrify its delivery truck fleet. However, electric vehicles are less ideal for long-haul routes through rural areas due to the lack of battery-charging infrastructure. By 2045, we can anticipate over 50,000 heavy trucks powered by hydrogen on German roads.

This increase is primarily in the cargo van segment, propelled by state-level regulations and incentives such as the Advanced Clean Trucks (ACT) rule. >> However, a significant challenge remains: the cost and availability of batteries, which form a substantial portion of an electric truck's cost. Despite a 90% decrease in lithium-ion battery pack prices over the past 15 years, the commercial sector still faces higher costs due to lower production volumes. >> Addressing this, major investments are underway in the U.S. to enhance battery production for commercial vehicles. Notable developments include a joint venture by industry leaders Accelera by Cummins, Daimler Truck, and PACCAR, planning a 21 gigawatt-hour factory, with investments reaching up to $3 billion. >> Government initiatives are bolstering these efforts. The Advanced Manufacturing Production Credit (45X), part of the IRA, offers significant subsidies for U.S. battery production. This is expected to catalyse further investment, job creation, particularly in the "Battery Belt," and enhance the supply chain for electric trucks. >> These advancements underscore a pivotal shift in the U.S. automotive industry towards sustainable transportation. Electric Vehicle (EV) sales have been accelerating in recent years, and 2024 has proven to be a pivotal year with significant policy changes and developments affecting brands in key markets. What exactly has been unfolding? 🌎 The US presidential election has emerged as a focal point, with growing concerns about green emissions and sustainability among the general population. Candidates in the US are emphasising job growth, driven by the expansion of battery belt production. 🌏 Meanwhile, in China, there's been a decisive push towards making EVs a cornerstone of their strategy to establish themselves as a high-end manufacturing powerhouse. This shift has led to a reduction in the presence of non-local automakers, and only time will reveal the full extent of its impact on the broader market. 🏭 Battery storage capacity has seen a significant increase in the past year, largely due to anticipated growth that failed to materialize due to ineffective policies in Europe. Consequently, there's now a substantial surplus of 200 GWh lithium-ion batteries, particularly in China. 🔋 Storing battery cells is an expensive move, prompting a shift towards the production of low-cost tech units. Sodium-ion technology has already been successfully scaled and commercialised, with BYD producing 30 GWh units this year. Check out the second annual Leaderboard on #automotive supply chains, published by Lead The Charge. The Leaderboard evaluates 18 of the world’s leading automakers (including #Hyundai and #Kia) on their efforts to eliminate emissions, environmental harms, and human rights violations from their #supplychains. This year showed steady progress across the industry, in particular on fossil-free steel and human rights due diligence. U.S. automakers are making the fastest progress, led by Tesla who shot up in the rankings from #9 to #3 in one year – the biggest increase of all the automakers. However, progress by the industry as a whole is lackluster when compared to the scale of the challenge ahead: one third of the automakers evaluated have still taken no concrete action on steel and aluminum, average scores across the indicators on responsible transition mineral sourcing, Indigenous Peoples’ rights and workers’ rights have risen by just 2 percentage points. Three of the biggest names in heavy equipment are launching a new joint venture to co-develop advanced, lightweight electric truck batteries. Van, truck, and bus electrification is going to scale faster than we think. Unlike consumer vehicles, fleet vehicles provide public-sector services and private-sector revenues. Electric vans, trucks, and buses can do it for less cost saving taxpayers on the public side, and boosting profits on the private side.
