From Executive Director Pamela Hess: Howdy Arcadians! Way back on Giving Tuesday I made a promise: - not to ask you to donate on THAT day, - and come December, I would ask you over and over again and tell you why you should. It begins! Don't need any further convincing? Click here! https://lnkd.in/g-QSybSd OK, to start: we want to ground you in the big picture.Arcadia does a lot of things. Our elevator pitch needs about 100 floors and an emergency stop to get it all out (I am working on that). Our mission is to cultivate vibrant local food systems that prioritize health, equity, and sustainability, from the farm forward. If you don’t live and breathe food systems every day like we do, that might not mean a whole lot to you. So let's get concrete. Here's how our mission manifests locally. We increase the supply of healthy, fresh local food. We grow food, a bunch of it, on our small farm in Alexandria. We also grow farmers – 189 military veterans, active duty personnel, and a smattering of partners and family members. And new in 2024, we are opening a community farm for our neighbors to grow their own food! We build demand for good fresh food. We have farm camps and field trips (returning in 2024 after a pandemic-imposed hiatus!) where literally hundreds of children get to experience the amazing experience of plucking a warm tomato off a vine, or snapping a fresh asparagus at its base, or pulling a beet out of the ground, and then eating it, right there on the farm. 98% of the children who came to farm camp tried a new fruit or vegetable, and want to keep eating it, and explore new foods. We nurture 14 school and community gardens so children and families can experience the miracle of agriculture where they learn and play. When you get to eat it fresh from the garden, that’s what you want from then on. We also train high school interns to take care of those gardens, making those gardens consistent and sustainable. We make sure people can get their hands on all that good food. We create affordable, convenient markets for people on the wrong end of the food system - folks who live in neighborhoods that grocery stores decline to serve. Our Mobile Markets serve 8 neighborhoods in DC and one in Virginia, not far from the farm, where we make local, fresh food – the same quality you want for your family – affordable by doubling the face value of federal nutrition benefits, and piloting a fresh food program in Virginia. It’s a virtuous circle. Grow good food, make sure everyone wants to eat it, make sure there are enough farmers growing it, then make sure everyone can get it. Every dollar you donate, every hour you spend on our farm, every friend you tell about Arcadia? You are creating a virtuous circle... with good food, healthy soil, and happy people at its nucleus. Please donate to our year-end campaign here (https://lnkd.in/g-QSybSd) and let’s make the circle bigger. You rule. - Your friends at Arcadia

JOIN OUR TEAM: there is a growing movement towards sustainability, healthy living, and fostering stronger family and community ties. Amidst this trend, an innovative initiative has emerged by our charitable organization, Vlada’s Seeds of Life: seed donations to public libraries. This seemingly simple act holds the potential to make a profound impact on individuals and communities alike, promoting sustainable practices, encouraging healthier lifestyles, and fostering more quality family time. The “Little Sprouts” seed donations to public libraries represent more than just a practical solution for accessing seeds; they are a catalyst for positive change within our communities. By promoting sustainability, encouraging healthy living, and fostering quality family time, these initiatives are sowing the seeds of a brighter, more resilient future. As we continue to embrace the values of self-sufficiency, environmental stewardship, and community building, let us remember the profound impact that something as simple as a packet of seeds can have on the world around us. Together, let’s cultivate thriving communities from the ground up.

#FoodForGood Moments!! As an embedded #agtech company dealing in the agriculture #supplychain you don't always get to see first hand the impact your tech is having. That isn't the case today with two of our customer R.D. Offutt Farms and The Farmlink Project. Here is one tangible example of how Fusionware is enabling #foodrecover to #impact the world for better. "Making the worlds abundance of nutrient food accessible for everyone!" #zerofoodwaste #foodinsecurity #foodrescue Second Harvest Heartland Manna Market MN

Love the idea of growing veges and herbs at home but don't have the skills, time or space to generate a year round harvest? I'm usually on LinkedIn engaging in urban design and transport, but I'm also Chair of a small Trust called PiPS. We run a #gardeninschools programme in The Bay of Plenty, teaching thousands of kids hands-on gardening and learning about their food system. We are super excited to be launching a crowd fund campaign to get our seedling subscription off the ground. It's a curated box of seasonal seedlings designed for small space gardeners that arrive monthly to your door. These little cherubs come in the buff! so #noplastic waste piling up in the shed. All proceeds from this initiative get invested back into our work with kids. Our campaign runs for a month, rewards include a one month or three month subscription starting in spring! If you don't garden yourself you can purchase a pay it forward box, which we will give to our partners at Tauranga food bank to help set up families who are struggling, so they can start growing their own veges at home. Subscriptions are available to anyone in the north island, or you can just donate to help get it off the ground. Our goal is to make growing food at home accessible and achievable for more people. We owe so much to the non-profit organizations whose work helps us build a better for people, better for the planet food system. Today's Local Food Forum features amazing efforts by two of these groups. Illinois Stewardship Alliance has released its 2024 state policy agenda, as approved last week by its members at its virtual annual meeting. The Alliance has scored major recent success, including the enactment this year of the $2 Million Local Food Infrastructure Grant program. Farm Aid, the musician-driven non-profit with decades of support for small farms and local food ecosystems, announced a total of $1.3 million in grants for organizations and farm innovators across the nation. And — not surprisingly, of course — many of them are from our region (including friends of Local Food Forum such as Illinois Stewardship Alliance, Farmers Rising, The Land Connection, and Marbleseed). Please read all about it in today's issue and celebrate the progress being made by the local food movement at so many levels. https://lnkd.in/gSeCdB7u
