The future of European competitiveness is built on today’s investment in research and innovation. I welcome the clear messages of the Heitor Report. The Report recommends stimulating more industrial RD&I investment, underpinned by state-of-the-art Technology Infrastructures and many other important suggestions for the next months and years ahead. At the Prosperity directorate we do our best to make this happen.
🔬 How can we achieve a more impactful, streamlined & targeted EU #research & #innovation funding, harnessing Europe’s full potential and diverse talent pool? An independent group of 15 leading experts, chaired by Manuel Heitor, has presented to the Commission their recommendations to strengthen Horizon Europe, the EU research and innovation programme, and its successor. Special thanks to all executives and experts who joined the roundtable "ESG and beyond – a debate with business leaders" and engaged in an inspiring discussion: Maja Rutkowska Agata Standa (she/her) Katarzyna Kosel Kinga Baran Jakub Paduch and the challenging thoughts raised by Rob van Tulder. Among the many important topics raised during the roundtable, one thread resonated in particular - how to integrate activities related to sustainability into the business model of a company, so that we can - profitably! - go beyond "ticking the boxes"? I am sure that we will return to this debate at different occasions to come. #SDG #ESG #Resilience #CreatingSharedValue

With brilliant, forward-looking, creative colleagues and excellent external advisors, we introduced Strategic Foresight to Accenture by creating two 'Futures' programs: Business Futures and Shaping the Future (from 2016-2020). These were the first programs to look 10 to 20 years out and through a STEEP (social, technology, economic, environmental, and political) lens based on a robust Horizon Scanning Trends & Signals program. We explored all the 'Future of AI' scenarios playing out today and the opportunities, implications, and unintended consequences. Back then, there was a great deal of caution and questioning about exploring beyond the future of technology into social, environmental, and geopolitical implications and opportunities -- the Futures programs opened up the C-level and company overall to embracing a broader lens, which is common now at all global companies (or perhaps should be). One of the core goals of the Shaping the Future program was to change the culture to embrace the future and take bigger, bolder risks without fear of ridicule for crazy ideas or career advancement impact. Strategic Foresight has become more critical than ever in embracing the future, exploring uncertainty (unknown unknowns), and managing risk (known unknowns). My tagline at Accenture was 'See you in the future' to promote the use of Strategic Foresight and Futures programs. Nice summary of an essential difference between foresight and insight. Foresight expands the imagination of 'what might be' beyond insights that stay within the realm of the known or knowable. Has anyone brought foresight back into insights processes, to ask different questions of the existing knowledge base?

Great point! Foresight is NOT insight! Futures and Forsighting work is critical for the sort of strategic planning and theory of change we need to help navigate uncertain futures.

#FlipThroughDialogue 📖 In the Yearbook Dialogue Igor Papič, PhD, Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Innovation highlighted the importance of fostering innovation and collaboration for national progress and emphasized the significance of the Scientific Research and Innovation Activities Act (ZZrID), calling it a crucial step in Slovenia's scientific journey: "Our aim is to move Slovenia from being moderate innovators to becoming innovation leaders. Highly recommend reading this 1-pager: 🔭 “Recognizing the difference between insight and foresight, and between complicated and complex, can transform how we approach strategic decisions. Foresight becomes more than a tool - it's a mindset shift that enables leaders to stay agile, future-ready, and resilient in the face of ambiguity. “ #foresight #systemsthinking #complexsystems

ERRIN Director, Pirita Lindholm, recently shared her insights on the importance of the upcoming Week of Innovative Regions in Europe 2024 conference in an article published by Science|Business. 🗨️Reflecting on the future regional innovation funding, Pirita stated “On the one hand we would like to see much stronger support for place-based ecosystems in the future framework programme, maybe throughout the programme, but also potentially strengthening existing programmes like the European Innovation Ecosystems (EIE), which supports the regional innovation valleys initiative." The #WIRE2024 conference in Budapest will bring together key voices in regional R&I to address regional development challenges and shape the future of EU innovation policy, including discussions on #FP10 and initiatives like #RegionalInnovationValleys. The conference is crucial in the context of the discussions on the Multiannual Financial Framework post-2027. The 2024 WIRE conference in Budapest will bring together Europe's top innovation experts and policy makers to explore ways to bridge regional development gaps and boost EU competitiveness. As Europe faces rising global competition in research and technology, the conference will focus on strategies to strengthen innovation at regional level, including through the upcoming FP10 framework. Discussions will address regional innovation challenges, including 'regional development traps', and present new initiatives such as the Regional Innovation Valleys project. Participants from at least 22 countries will provide insights on how to foster inclusive growth, paving the way for a more cohesive European innovation ecosystem. 📌 Read more about it: https://lnkd.in/e2pbtpAC Sponsored by NRDIO - National Research Development and Innovation Office (NKFIH)
