Food justice encompasses every individual's right to access healthy, culturally appropriate, and sustainably produced food. However, reality paints a different picture—socioeconomic status, race, and geographic location often determine access to nutritious food. Various research indicates a strong correlation between food insecurity and adverse health outcomes. When it comes to addressing these health inequities, it is essential for organizations to take the initiative in understanding the cultural nuances of diverse communities. Our newest #WickedProblemsinWellness blog details the tactics that various communities are leveraging to promote food justice and combat food insecurity. When organizations across the spectrum leverage their knowledge, collaborate with communities, advocate for policy changes, and champion cultural competency, they are able to create a more just and equitable food system for all. We know food insecurity impacts a person’s health. We also know it is sometimes challenging to navigate nutrition resource programs. That’s where Mang Vang, M Health Fairview’s food resource navigator, comes in.  Vang helps patients who get care at our East Metro clinics and are facing food insecurity find essential food resources through our partnerships with trusted, local community organizations. “There are a lot of resources available for those who face these challenges,” Vang said. “We should not feel bad if we need to turn to some of these resources.” A fresh food prescription program, a food voucher program, and East Side Table all work to provide those in need healthy, nutritious food at low-to-no cost. Vang’s role is the first-of-its-kind for our health system and is a part of our larger mission to address the social determinants of health throughout our communities. An unexpected financial event can set into motion a cascade of coping mechanisms, and often, the food budget is the first to get cut. It can start with food anxiety, wondering if there will be enough food for the week or month. If the financial hardship continues, that can lead to decreased adult food intake and then children’s food intake. Food insecurity decreases cognitive bandwidth and toxic stress. It also decreases nutritional quality, and at times, calories increase through less healthy foods. Food access is a priority focus area for the Healthy Monadnock Alliance, our regional public health network, which is principally supported by Cheshire Medical Center. Yesterday was World Food Day 🌍, and this year’s theme hits close to home for us: “Food for a better life and a better future.” According to the @UN, there are 733 million people facing hunger globally, and over 2.8 billion people who can’t afford a healthy diet. We believe everyone should have access to nutritious food to lead a healthy life. And while these numbers are daunting, we can all make an impact if we start working in even one community.
