A few nuggets of wisdom from one of the SHAKE ventures on how to navigate the agricultural sector for star-ups and scale-ups...

Lessons from the Startup Trenches Start-ups and scale-ups in the agricultural sector bring energy, agility, and new perspectives to Integrated Crop Management (ICM). Yet they also face a unique set of challenges, from resource constraints to the constant need to adapt quickly in a field driven by tradition. Success in this environment often comes down to listening deeply, staying nimble, and focusing on the true needs of farmers and industry partners. Working within the start-up ecosystem offers valuable lessons. Limited resources force creative problem-solving, while rapidly changing conditions build resilience and adaptability. Commercialising new technologies in ICM isn’t easy; it means balancing the push for innovation with the reality of implementing these solutions in environments where old habits are deeply ingrained. Finding that balance often involves not just creating a valuable product but also building trust with end users who can see its benefits firsthand. The most successful start-ups in agriculture are those that keep an ear to the ground—listening to the challenges farmers face and working to create solutions that fit real-world conditions. It’s not about flashy technology; it’s about delivering value that makes a tangible difference, one step at a time. Lesson Learned: In the fast-paced world of start-ups, listening closely to customers and staying flexible are key. Empowering Agri-Entrepreneurs for a Brighter Future! The Department of Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare has been driving innovation in agriculture through the “Innovation and Agri-Entrepreneurship Development” program under Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY) since 2018-19. This initiative aims to foster agri-entrepreneurship by providing financial and technical support to nurture startups. 5 Knowledge Partners (KPs) and 24 RKVY Agribusiness Incubators (R-ABIs) dedicated to training and incubating these startups. The program offers financial support up to Rs. 5 lakh at the idea/pre-seed stage and up to Rs. 25 lakh at the seed stage, enabling entrepreneurs to launch and scale their innovations. Through national-level programs like agri-startup conclaves, fairs, exhibitions, webinars, and workshops, we connect agri-startups with key stakeholders, creating a vibrant ecosystem for growth. From 2019-20 to 2023-24, the government has released Rs. 122.50 crore to support 1708 startups through the KPs and R-ABIs.

DataYoo: It utilises satellite remote sensing and big data analysis technology to monitor crop environments in real-time and optimise resource allocation, improving agricultural productivity and sustainability.
