Region-based Biosecurity Tools Regional Australia has new resources to help regional communities and stakeholders play a greater part in biosecurity preparedness. #SNSWInnovationHub has been part of a project to develop methodologies for communities to assess their biosecurity preparedness, based on the potential impact of a biosecurity event on the local economy, assets and amenities. Two new documents • Strengthening Biosecurity Preparedness: A Framework for Regional Biosecurity Action • Background report: Regional Biosecurity Framework Development share the outcomes of the project so communities can identify the social, economic and environmental assets that are most important to the local economy and align biosecurity planning accordingly. It’s all about making biosecurity management more relevant and engaging the community in biosecurity preparedness. Imagine losing four years of production and having to rip out an entire vineyard because of one biosecurity breach. It’s a devastating reality that vineyard owners face if pests like phylloxera take hold. That’s why we’ve been working alongside local growers, researchers, and technology partners to create a system that prevents outbreaks before they happen. Our efforts have been recognised with the Australian Biosecurity Award - community, celebrating our role in protecting not just individual vineyards, but entire communities and regional economies. Determining our national established weed priorities: Step 1 now open 🌱 Weeds have a major impact on Australia’s agriculture imposing a cost of nearly $4.3 billion across Australia each year. They also adversely impact our natural environment, cultural values, human health and community spaces. 📢 Now is the time to put forward an EOI to help determine weeds for national coordinated action. 🧑🤝🧑By working together, we can reduce the impacts of weeds on our farms, forests, cultural values and threatened species. 🌍 New Release Alert! 🌱 #Biodiversity_Mainstreaming_Unit, OCB, FAO proudly releases a new booklet entitled "Delivering on the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework through Agri-food Systems". Booklet Here: https://lnkd.in/d4Ts6GzX Around half of the KMGBF's targets are related to the Agri-food system (Agriculture, forestry, fisheries, and aquaculture). This clearly indicates the urge to mainstream biodiversity across the agri-food system. By highlighting the connections between the KMGBF and agri-food sectors, this publication aims to facilitate the engagement of agri-food stakeholders in the framework's implementation. Missed the ABC’s recent carp-centred episode of ‘Eat the Invaders’? Catch up on iView at any time - https://lnkd.in/gJ6ckiap The episode gives great background on the damage carp are causing to our waterways and other fish species, and the consequence of inaction as their population grows. There’s also info on the carp virus, like how there’s no other method of getting numbers down to a manageable level – no matter how tasty you can make these pests. It’s why we’re getting prepared now, developing a plan to pilot the release of the virus in a controlled environment, pending approval by the Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry. Want to join us in making a difference? Then Carpe Diem (Seize the Day) and sign up for our monthly newsletter to hear the latest updates: https://lnkd.in/gcF6RRXe #carpediem #carp

Long-term field trial ‘Pasture 365’ has commenced focal activities at Agriculture Victoria’s #Ellinbank Research Farm. This innovative project aims to find a #forage mix that can grow successfully 365 days of the year. Funded by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry's Future Drought Fund through the Victoria Drought Resilience Adoption & Innovation Hub, the five-year program is a major initiative to support the development and adoption of #multispecies pastures for beef, sheep and dairy production. Previous research from overseas has demonstrated that multispecies pastures have a longer green cover and possibly higher nutritive value that conventional ryegrass under drought and drying climatic conditions. Food & Fibre Gippsland is involved in the 365-day temperate feed production project in its capacity as the Gippsland Node of the Victorian Drought Resilience Adoption and Innovation Hub (Vic Hub). A very useful-looking tool.
This May, in honour of international #planthealthday #IDPH2024, we’re highlighting some of the innovative ways we’re approaching #biosecurity in #Australia through the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry's Biosecurity Innovation Program https://lnkd.in/g3BREttC One such innovation is a phone app enabled with AI recognition software to assist biosecurity officers on the frontline to identify the high-risk Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (BMSB). If it reached Australia, BMSB would pose a significant threat to our agricultural industries, native plants and our way of life. The technology will increase confidence and speed of identification to help distinguish BMSB from closely resembling endemic species that are not a biosecurity threat. The department is always innovating to safeguard our agricultural industries, facilitate safer trade and promote global plant health. #biosecuritymatters
