Some of you might have noticed (yet another) podcast in my feed. I started a show and newsletter called Cross Tabs (with a little help from Paul Soldera) to help demystify and depressurize something that in the US, in an election year, causes a lot of anxiety: polls. As a strategist and a researcher, I know quite a bit about research methods and survey design and sampling and all that. But public opinion polling feels, in many respects, like a completely different beastie. Nevertheless, every 2-4 years people suddenly get really interested in a branch of my industry, so I'm here to help bring it all back down to earth for you. The latest episode of the show features Paul Westcott of L2, Inc. in which he generously and clearly explains what pollsters are referring to when they talk about matching or recruiting sample via the "voter file". I think it's a really illuminating conversation about what campaigns or pollster know about you and how they use that to talk to the right people, but also about a big data problem that might be familiar to many of you: bringing together disparate datasets, normalizing them, making them usable, and protecting them. You can find that episode and more at www.crosstabspodcast.com #bigdata #polling #voterfile

Today I'm launching a little project. In addition to the amazing In the Demo Podcast, I am adding a new show and newsletter to my (probably overcrowded) repertoire. It's my 2024 special project to (I hope!) soothe the American election soul, and shed more light than heat on the rather audacious enterprise of trusting ourselves and our fellow citizens to elect our representatives. It's called Cross Tabs - and it's a newsletter/show whose purpose is neither punditry, nor prediction, but simply explaining how polls work, how they're designed and conducted, what they can tell you and what they can't. My plan is to have more quantie folks join me in the unpacking process to try to understand what a particular poll was trying to do, how it went about doing it, and how the design of a poll gives you clues about how to analyze that poll. I've done a small amount of political focus groups in my career and I am always That Nerd who reads the questionnaire and cross tabs when pollsters publish them. I realize that a lot of people think polls are a bit mysterious, or hard to understand - and that makes them hard to trust. I'd like to help demystify them and make them more accessible - though I can't make any promises about trustworthiness. So - what do you want to know about political polling? What terms do you want us to define and explain? What always strikes you as weird or confusing or jargon-y about polls? Are there any particular polls you're curious about? Or polls you've seen compared and contrasted in the media? Drop a comment below, or send me a message, or ... sign up at the link below to get updates as we get this project off the ground. Also - are you a quant researcher who'd like to nerd out with me about this? Get in touch! I'd love to have you on the show or contribute to the newsletter. www.crosstabspodcast.com Smart folks I think might have smart questions... Latest episode of Cross Tabs is available for download and we’ve got a companion piece up on the blog (which you could be getting sent to your inbox if you went to crosstabspodcast.com)… For the show, we looked at a public poll about people’s satisfaction with democracy, entrance polls in Iowa, and talked about question formation, sample weighting and quotas, likert scales, and the difference between contact methods. Thanks to Laura Miranda-Browne (she/her/ella) Jeffrey Anbinder Faris Yakob for some great questions about polling methods! We started to answer them in this episode but will continue to cover these topics in depth. The newsletter goes deep on the democratic satisfaction numbers, and in particular looks at research headlines that express trends over time or compares one group against others. A quick couple of provocations for you from the piece: Any time you hear the news report on a trend in polling, or hear comparative language (e.g., "this group is more likely to believe x") it's always important to ask a few questions. These might include, in the case of "trend" reporting: * How long, consistently and continuously have pollsters been measuring this trend? * Have they changed anything about how they ask the question over time? * Can we look inside the sample to see which groups might be driving the trend? And in the case of "comparative" reporting: * In the survey, did they include anybody else in the sample, or only the group they’re describing? * If they did include other groups, how much more likely (or less likely) is this group to say they believe "x"? Stay curious, stay critical. #polling #publicopinion #researchmethods
