Association of Old Crows October 9, 2024 Dear Fellow Crows, I am writing to emphasize the importance of your vote in the ongoing election of your next Board of Directors. Many other Crows have already found the time and exercised their right to vote, but this email is sent directly to you individually to urge you to do the same. The AOC community is one of the greatest in the world, but when only limited numbers of our members vote for those running for seats on the Board of Directors, we run the risk of the AOC Board not equitably representing our total membership. When only Crows from the largest Chapters or the predominant Service vote, we get an imbalance of expertise, perspective, and appreciation on our Board, ultimately impacting critical areas such as membership and awards. Quite simply, poor total voter numbers will not result in ideal representation for all of our members. AOC is member-driven and is truly your association. We all share a common passion for giving our forces a decisive tactical advantage in the EMS battlespace across all warfighting domains. When listening to Tauranga voters, I hear confusion 🤔🤔 about STV. Watch the bite-sized video below for an intro. We will vote next month under the STV system to elect one councillor 🥇🤠🏁 from each ward. The same system is used to elect one mayor 🥇🏫🏁 🗳🔢 Voting packs will be mailed 📫 on 29 June. You can vote by mail ✉📮 or drop your ballots in an orange bin 🧡🚮🧡 located in public places such as supermarkets 🛒 🔬🔬 STV is an elegant system that allows you to rank all candidates in order of your preference 1️⃣, 2️⃣, 3️⃣, 4️⃣, etc, without: ❌ incentivising any 😬🤔 "strategic voting", or ❌ risk of 😱😤 "vote splitting", or ❌ fear of 🙄😫 "wasted votes". 🏘🏡 STV elects candidates with broad support 💞 across the community - which is helpful in delivering a council that can work together. It is unlikely to elect polarising figures as they can't find some level of support from a majority of voters. Hopefully, one of your favourite candidates reaches 50%, and your lower ranking won't matter, but there is no downside 😬 to ranking everybody. There is no way that ranking someone you don't like 🤢 can hurt someone you ranked higher. 💡Your SINGLE vote stays with your 1️⃣ rank until they are eliminated 😵👻 from the race. None of your other ranked choices counts any "vote" from you until ALL candidates you rank higher than them are eliminated from the race. If your current candidate is eliminated, your single vote is transferred 📤📥 to the next pick that is still in the race 🏇. That might be your 2️⃣ but it could be lower down if all your higher ranks are already eliminated 😵 Here is a bite-sized 2-minute guide using STV to select a favourite chocolate bar 🍫🏁 . Like our wards, only one bar is the winner 🥇. The equivalent of the 🍫 "tastiness quota" for our elections is 50% of the voters in the ward. The graphic isn't quite to scale for a 50% quota, but hopefully, you get the concept.

To cast your ballot, you need to be registered to vote. Even if you think you're already registered, it never hurts to double check!
