North East partnership to build future skills “As a regional Centre of Excellence, HICSA’s strategic connection with Northumbria University will see the systems of further and higher education brought closer together, supporting the priorities of government, widening opportunities, and enabling growth for the construction industries, now and into the future.” Education Partnership North East and Northumbria University have announced a partnership, formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding signed by Ellen Thinnesen OBE Professor Andy Long, FREng, centred on the Housing Innovation and Construction Skills Academy (HICSA) in Riverside Sunderland. The new £20 million state-of-the-art facility, set to open in 2025, will provide a skills gateway designed to attract people into pursuing careers in the housing and construction sectors. Upon completion, this state-of-the-art school will accommodate 1120 pupils and offer a modern, sustainable, and inspiring learning environment for students of generations to come. As we begin pre-construction works, we’re committed to delivering this new world-class education facility while driving meaningful social and economic impact for the wider community.

We’re excited to share our new groundbreaking partnership with Education Partnership North East that will come to life at the Housing Innovation and Construction Skills Academy (HICSA) in Sunderland, a state-of-the-art facility that will educate, train, and upskill local people in housebuilding, commercial construction, modern methods and green construction techniques, including home retrofit. The partnership will unlock career pathways in the built environment and develop cutting-edge skills to power the North East economy. We will collaborate in a range of ways, including providing clear and aligned educational pathways for learners who will have guaranteed progression routes into further and higher education. Opening in 2025, HICSA will bring together a unique partnership which includes EPNE, alongside Gentoo Homes , Brims Construction Limited Homes England Bishop Chadwick Catholic Education Trust and Sunderland City Council. The aim is to develop an eco-system that can take people from the age of 14 into meaningful study and work opportunities, providing them with a route to higher level qualifications at the University. One of the things that struck me most during my visit to Repton School, one of the oldest and most prestigious public schools in the UK, was the incredible sense of safety and tranquility that the rural and ancient village offers. As I arrived, I was greeted by an unexpected but delightful sight—a peacock proudly strutting down the road! It’s moments like these that remind you how special and peaceful the surroundings are, and how they create an environment conducive to learning and personal growth. The village of Repton, with its rich history, offers a safe, serene backdrop for students, allowing them to focus on their academic and extracurricular pursuits with peace of mind. For international students, the village provides a comforting environment that feels far removed from the hustle and bustle of city life, giving them the space to thrive and grow. Repton’s proximity to East Midlands Airport (just a 20-minute drive), along with Birmingham and London Heathrow, ensures easy travel access for students and families from all over the world. But what’s even more impressive is how seamlessly the ancient and the modern coexist within the school. Repton has blended its centuries-old heritage with cutting-edge facilities, creating an ideal setting for 21st-century learning. Their new business suite, for instance, facilitates seamless international interactions during lessons and debates. This modern resource allows students to engage in global discussions, sharpening their critical thinking and communication skills in an interconnected world. 🌟 Inspiring the next generation of innovators 🌟 In early December 2024, nearly 300 students from 10 local schools stepped onto the project site of the M1 Pacific Motorway extension to Raymond Terrace (M12RT)—the region’s largest infrastructure initiative—to launch its new School STEM Education Program. The event showcased the exciting opportunities that STEM careers in civil construction have to offer. Students explored diverse career pathways, engaged with industry professionals, and saw firsthand how Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) come to life in real-world projects. This two-year program aims to spark curiosity and inspire young minds to pursue dynamic careers in STEM, with hands-on activities, innovative programs, and the support of passionate professionals. We have been working with Marshall to outline a brave new exemplary vision for Cambridge, as part of a new call for evidence from Cambridge Ahead. Launched as a collaboration between Cambridge Ahead and the Global Sustainability Institute, the call for evidence challenges stakeholders to issue a bold new vision for a zero-carbon city - one that meets the city’s future #energy needs in an equitable and inclusive way. We supported Marshall Group to outline the barriers and opportunities across the city, looking at the possibility of comprehensive energy #masterplanning, investment in #renewable energy and the potential for advanced #energy storage and smart grids. Marshall is currently exploring options for the development of Cambridge East - the redevelopment of Cambridge Airport to create a new urban quarter that transforms the east of the city, delivering new homes, jobs, facilities, #infrastructure, and opportunities for #Cambridge. More interesting findings from Northern Kane County Region 110's post- student tour survey: "91.7% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that they have a positive perception of careers in manufacturing, engineering, technology, and trades." This statistic evolved from 64% of respondents who originally indicated limited knowledge of manufacturing & industrial careers. Feature - A “transformative investment” for the people of Ashington “Our new Ashington campus will be an inspirational centre for learning, and will play an important role in the UK’s net-zero ambitions and the Government’s prioritisation of further education…More specifically, the investment will hugely benefit Ashington.” A pioneering £54 million net-zero college in Ashington has moved a step closer after the venture was granted planning approval by councillors last month. Northumberland College’s new campus, on a 5.7-acre site in Wansbeck Business Park, will boast state-of-the-art academic and technical facilities, including a dedicated Advanced Manufacturing, Engineering and Construction Skills Centre, aligned to industry and regional skills priorities. Due to open in 2026, the campus will be one of a new generation of Government-led educational buildings developed by the Department for Education using biophilic principles, with sustainability at the heart of its build and operation.
