How can you be sustainable in a work system that, not so subtly, pushes you to go full speed in every sense—whether it’s searching for a job, working, or constantly thinking about work? Sometimes, it feels easier to answer the classic question: “Are we alone in the universe?” And yet, with The Earth Society and the many people we’ve met along the way, we like to slow down every now and then. We take the time to share our experiences in the field of sustainability, creating a space to reflect, connect, and remind ourselves that a more human pace is indeed possible.

The graduation season is again upon us, providing a golden opportunity to tap into a fresh pool of bright, driven, and ambitious individuals eager to start their careers. A quick set of tips for our new graduates which I wish I’ve uncovered when I was a fresh grad myself: 1. Network, Network, Network. That means connecting with professionals in your field of interest or your field of choice, attending job fairs, and making the most of professional platforms like LinkedIn. 2. Tailor Your Applications. Don’t go submitting a generic resume - customize it and have cover letters composed for each job application to highlight your unique skills and experiences. 3. Stay Positive and More Importantly, Persistent. Searching for a job can be daunting, but persistence pays off. 4. Leverage on Being New to the Workforce. Take advantage of your fresh perspectives and your tech-savvy talents - your fluency in the latest technologies and social media trends, your adaptability and resiliency having recently navigated challeges of recent years, and your value for diversity inclusion as these drive a forward-thinking culture in workplaces. It has the potential to be a brilliant nationwide model that can be used by regional groupings of manufacturers to take the factory to the kids and their parents. #skills #recruitment Something I put to Angela in the interview was that as a sector we don't seem able to do this kind of thing as a sector-wide, high profile initiative that would benefit everyone. It's always passionate, committed people like her and Leigh having to drive it themselves. She agreed, putting it in terms of loads of small boats, all with much the same sort of destination in mind - but how much more effective if there was one big ship? Works at all levels. CAREERS: The Evolution of Career Paths Not too long ago, the concept of careers was cloaked in simplicity. You were either a doctor, an engineer, a pilot, or a teacher. Doctors and engineers stood at the pinnacle—"A-material" students who embodied success. Everyone I knew wanted to follow one of these paths, believing they were the only routes to respect and wealth. Pilots, on the other hand, were wrapped in an air of mystery, spoken of with awe. Becoming a pilot was like ascending to near-divine status—what did it take? Few knew. The prevailing belief system was rigid: Doctors worked only in hospitals, engineers belonged in factories, and all teachers taught in schools. Our understanding of careers was limited, and any deviation seemed like failure. The pressure was real—if you couldn't become at least a teacher, hope seemed lost. But times have changed. We've emerged from that narrow view of careers, yet some still cling to outdated beliefs. This is why career fairs are so vital. They provide future professionals with a chance to meet current practitioners, bridging the gap between expectation and reality. If someone had told me years ago that careers like "soft skills trainer" or "facilitator" existed, I would have laughed. Yet, here we are. It makes me wonder: If I'd known about these options, would I have chosen a different path? For those passionate about career development, we must continue debunking career myths and shining a light on emerging opportunities. Ultimately, I look forward to a future where careers are not just job titles but reflections of the societal problems we are solving.
