Nightshift Progress Update 2 Hey LinkedIn! This is the second update for 'NightShift', a first-person horror game that I am currently developing, inspired by the Weeping Angels from Doctor Who. It’s been over two months since the last update and I've been constantly feeling like I hadn't made much progress. But when listing everything out, it turns out there’s actually a lot of updates worth sharing. Notably, I’ve added a dynamic procedural heartbeat that reacts to the player’s proximity to the angels. It adjusts in real-time, speeding up as the angel gets closer. The Angel catch system’s been updated too, now when an angel catches you the camera snaps to the statue for a intense face-to-face before respawn. The angels now have visual and audio cues when they hear you. Also made tweaks to the AI logic and Navigation. I also composed and added a simple, looping dissonant piano riff to build tension throughout the level. After experimenting with alternatives for the angels like gargoyles and knights in armor, the Hebe statues just hit the right eerie tone, so I'm not changing them. Even if it means keeping the game free due to copyright concerns, it’s the right call for the vibe and I'm fine with it. I've been figuring it out and learning a lot as I go, and seeing it go from an idea to being properly playable at this stage feels super surreal. Not the biggest update, but definitely feels like the ball is rolling now. Check out the video to see it all in action. AI in game dev is a desperate crutch allowing investors and leaders to think that they can keep limping along with broken development processes focused on planning, features, and assets and ignore the fact that we don't build video games in an effective way for our devs or our players, and that the problem is only getting worse over time.
