In the mid-1900s, as the fashion industry flourished, Polo Ralph Lauren emerged not just as a brand but as a timeless symbol of pseudo-luxury. With a net worth exceeding seven and a half billion dollars, Polo has stood the test of time, thanks to the vision and tenacity of its founder, Ralph Lauren. Born on October 14, 1939, in New York City to Jewish immigrants, Lauren's early life lacked the opulence associated with his brand. Despite financial struggles, Lauren developed a passion for style and fashion. After a stint in sales and business classes at City College, he started designing his own neckwear, leading to the creation of Polo in 1967. Lauren's ties, embodying a classy English aristocrat look, quickly gained popularity. Expanding into menswear in 1968, he secured a spot at Bloomingdale's, a move that solidified Polo's presence in Manhattan. In 1971, Lauren ventured to the opposite corner of the U.S., opening his first standalone store on Beverly Hills' Rodeo Drive. The pivotal move to California aligned with Lauren's strategy to tap into the allure of Hollywood. With the release of the iconic mesh sport shirt in 1972, featuring the signature polo player logo designed by Renee Lacoste, Polo gained recognition as a brand synonymous with prestige and high-quality outerwear. Throughout the 1970s, Polo's association with successful films, including "The Great Gatsby" and "Annie Hall," catapulted its popularity. In 1981, Lauren expanded globally, opening the first Polo store outside the U.S. in London, marking the brand's entry into the European market. The ensuing decades witnessed Polo Ralph Lauren's evolution, encompassing Western collections, home goods, children's lines, and denim. Embracing the digital age with polo.com, Ralph Lauren secured awards, prestigious partnerships, and even the key to the city of New York. After nearly 50 years at the helm, Ralph Lauren stepped down as CEO, passing the baton to his son David. Today, Polo Ralph Lauren thrives under the Ralph Lauren Corporation, a testament to the enduring legacy of a college dropout with a vision for something greater. As we reflect on this journey, it's fascinating to see how one man's vision transformed a small tie business into a global fashion powerhouse. Great feature in Forbes: "I recently came across an forward-thinking menswear item from Collars & Co. The progressive brand has changed the game in the shirting industry. They developed an original dress-collar polo. Essentially, it is a comfortable stretch polo shirt with a structured dress collar. The style provides a hassle-free way to look polished with all the benefits of a classic dress shirt. I own one and I fully endorse the item. More importantly, I am interested in watching this brands development - moving into the near future." https://lnkd.in/efPs5umr

Sizing can be very tricky, especially when ordering online without the chance to try on the garment first. As a fashion designer and founder of Murlong Cres, I have first-hand experience with this challenge and want to discuss sizing and grading. When a clothing brand develops its size chart, it sets its own measurements. There are no universal standards for which measurements correspond to each size. Brands must find the average measurements for each size and create their sizing accordingly. However, there is no true “average” person—everyone has unique measurements. This creates a challenge for ready-to-wear clothing, as predefined sizes may not fit everyone, leading to a significant problem in the industry: high return rates, which is a topic for another day. As a founder, I recognized this issue early on and sought a solution. We partnered with a local tailor to offer custom tailoring before shipping. This collaboration allows us to provide affordable tailoring, despite the usual costs and time involved. Our customers simply provide their unique measurements, and we adjust the garments accordingly. This approach has been highly successful, and while scaling it might be challenging, we are committed to continuing this offering. We know there’s no such thing as “one size fits all,” and we strive to provide the perfect fit for everyone. #founder #clothingbrand #sizing #tailoring
