High Country News makes a strong case for wetlands. They aren't getting the reputation they warrant as a star carbon capturer among the treasure trove of ecosystem services Earth provides. The article speaks to the need to map, measure, and conserve the wetlands we still have and we've underestimated their presence and their role in ensuring a resilient future. Paraphrased, the action needed will be a part of the toolkit we need to maintain resilience to climate change, have clean water, feed ourselves, and stay safe from flooding. I agree that we must do better in wetland conservation efforts. https://lnkd.in/gK6KX4tP

A second year of work has wrapped up for the Sturgeon Bank Sediment Enhancement Pilot Project in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia—an ambitious endeavor aimed at reclaiming lost ground and restoring the marsh to its former footprint in an innovative and sustainable way while, among other goals, combating sea-level rise and coastal biodiversity loss. The benefits of marsh restoration extend far beyond ecological renewal, and includes coastal flood protection. A healthy marsh serves as a natural buffer against coastal erosion and flooding, safeguarding nearby communities and infrastructure. By enhancing the resilience of the marsh ecosystem, the project contributes to the overall resilience of coastal areas. #TheNatureForce #NatureBasedSolutions #FloodMitigation #CoastalFloodProtection #SeaLevelRise #CoastalErosion #ClimateResilience

PBS recently aired the first episode of a two-part series focusing on the efforts to restore the Indian River Lagoon (IRL), a crucial 156-mile estuary on Florida's east coast, which significantly contributes $7.6 billion annually to the local economy. The IRL has been severely impacted by nutrient pollution, leading to harmful algal blooms, fish kills, and extensive seagrass loss. Despite continuous efforts by local and state organizations, these issues persist. In 2023, Brevard County, supported by a grant from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, collaborated with AECOM to test the effectiveness of our Algae Harvesting and Hydronucleation Flotation Technology (HFT) in aiding the lagoon's restoration. This research successfully treated over 4 million gallons of water, resulting in increased levels of dissolved oxygen, a key factor in the health of aquatic ecosystems. However, while these initial results are promising, further work is necessary to develop a comprehensive restoration plan for the IRL. Stay tuned for further updates on this important environmental initiative. https://lnkd.in/eMu9etQh #aecom AECOM - Environmental Services #algaeharvesting #saveourlagoon #Krystelknowles

Bit of news coverage for our project with the Gumbaynggirr Rangers investigating the mangrove die-off at Boambee creek. The hail storm initiated the die-off but revealed an underlying problem - whilst other sites recovered, this site turned into a stinky black mass as the dying #mangroves released the #pollution they had been absorbing back into the environment. We detected carbon disulfide, naphthalene, furans, xylene and other toxic chemicals in the rotting mangrove roots. We definitely need further research to quantify contaminants in the sediment, water and seafood to assess the extent of the hazard. But it is interesting that the EPA doesn't consider a forest of dead mangroves and absence of invertebrates in the sediment as evidence that the contaminated site is harmful to aquatic life. The good news is that there are some signs of recovery now and the Gumbaynggirr rangers are growing mangrove seeds and using natural cultural methods to help restore this important ecosystem Southern Cross University Ngiyambandigay Wajaarr Aboriginal Corporation

Great initiative – which aims to ensure 300,000km of degraded rivers and 350 million hectares of degraded wetlands are under restoration by 2030 as well as protect critical freshwater ecosystems
The road to #resilience is a river! Today's theme for #WorldEnvironmentDay could not be more urgent: land restoration, stopping desertification & building drought resilience. 45 countries are committed to tackling this together through the Freshwater Challenge. Last week we met to discuss how we do this faster and better to meet #GBF targets to restore 300,00km of #rivers and 350 million ha of #wetlands. It gives me hope to work with representatives from the 45 countries and the EU, plus the dedicated supporting partners of the Freshwater Challenge 💙 Cathrine Mutambirwa Francesca Antonelli Lis Mullin Bernhardt Stuart Orr Stuart Crane James Dalton Jerker Tamelander Frank Mols Ian Harrison Sarah Davidson Philip Leonard Richard Lee Flore Lafaye de Micheaux Salma Zeid Ingrid Timboe Shahbano Tirmizi Flavia Rocha Loures, LL.M, Ph.D Paula Martinelli Benjamin Christ https://lnkd.in/e-BnaUEY

There’s a growing movement among faith-based organizations to support & lead on forest restoration. They could play a much bigger role moving forward. Thanks to their broad influence, significant land holdings and, in many cases, pro-environmental values, faith-based groups can be powerful allies in restoration projects worldwide.
