Did you know that perinatal transmission of hepatitis B affects approximately 25,000 newborns in the US each year? Perinatal transmission, or mother-to-child transmission, is a critical issue because about a quarter of these infants may die prematurely due to the infection, and 90% of the survivors develop chronic hepatitis B. However, there is hope. Medical interventions during pregnancy, such as administering hepatitis B immune globulin and a single-dose hepatitis B vaccine within 12 hours of birth, followed by a complete vaccination series, can prevent the infection in 94% of cases.
