A writer's kinship with music Lately I've been listening to the sensuous saxophone and piano playing in #jazz. Dang, can those players tell stories with their instruments. Loneliness, intrigue, sauciness, bliss. It's all there. They grab notes from their vocabularies, arrange them in musical sentences and tug on our heartstrings with experimentations of tension and release. In their musical ways, they keep faith with a writer's credo. When the assignment allows it, I try to #write with a hook. A quip, a quote, a delectable treat revealed in a syrupy scene - something, anything that foreshadows what's brewing. And if it works, the #reader may hang around. I think jazz #audiences are more forgiving. They stick around to be #entertained. And with a sublime player, a listener's emotions dance around key changes, tempo twists, crescendos and diminuendos. All matters of musical #motifs that jostle for our #attention. As #writers, we listen. We hang back. Sometimes stubbornly so. If there's something to say, it'll be experimented upon before it's put into final form. We know this. And we'll #dance too. Maybe a minuet. A #performance of doggedness in which priorities, timing, revisions and fatigue conceal the beloved melodrama of writing for writing's sake. That's the #craft. And there are many inspiring parallels to #music. My favorite? Maybe how writers compose the hummable, memorable and mesmerizing lines that capture the purity of our imaginations and joys. #communications #writing #drama

Music is one of the biggest influences in my life. While growing up, hip hop shaped the way I understood expression and poetry. I learned that the way your convey your emotions and life experiences does not always have to be formal. Using music is a perfect way to express yourself. Mindset Coach & Mixing Pro To Singer-Songwriters 🎹 Helping you conquer self-doubt and elevate your sound to create your best songs yet.
If only I could sing like that... play like that... write like that... Sound familiar? When I first started writing music, I was continuously concerned about “catching up.” When I felt I wasn’t moving quickly enough, I’d often get discouraged. At one point, I even gave up for several years. With any pursuit, there are two ways of looking at things: • How far you’ve come • How far you still have to go It’s easy to fall into the trap of focusing on what isn’t. But you have to put that aside. Instead, focus on the progress you’ve already made. Remember when you got started? You didn’t know how to sing, write, or even play. Now look at where you are. Wherever that may be. Every day you keep at it, you’ll improve. And every day presents a new chance. If you’re stuck in comparison-itis mode, it’s time to wake up. Remember... Only YOU can decide what do think about that. Only YOU are in competition with yourself. Only YOU can live your life. Choose wisely. = #SingerSongwriter #SongwritingTips #Songwriting #GrowthMindset

MUSIC TO YOUR EARS So, I'm driving down the road this morning, flipping between the three radio stations I love the most when I hear Sarah McLachlan's voice. I stop to listen. Her voice is both soothing and urgent. Her lyrics go deep. I let her voice flow over me and I thought to myself--did she write this song, select the words to sing, when she was deep into some emotion? Because music can do that to you--invite emotion in and suddenly memories float up. You have tears in your eyes. You're laughing. You feel like one with the universe. Maybe I'm the only one who this happens to? Maybe it's because I grew up with a mom who had a sophisticated palette for music--early Dylan to Edith Piaf to Tchaikovsky to Celtic ballads and their cousin, bluegrass, to Odetta--so I respond deeply to music? Maybe it's because I'm a writer and we're sometimes sensitive. I don't know. But I do know that music can shift your mood in a second, pull up those emotions and GIVE YOU SOMETHING TO WRITE ABOUT. I shouted that last part because I want you to have ALL the tools for writing. So, if you haven't used music, crank up your Spotify. And let me know what you're playing so I can add it to my playlist. And tell me what beautiful prose or verse came out of your musical listening/writing session. Okay? Go ahead. Write. #musictowriteto #writing #writer

Are you struggling with writing? Does it feel flat? Just like music, writing is about having a rhythm. You have the intro that attracts attention, the chorus that you tend to sing repeatedly, and the outro to cap off your piece beautifully. Vary your structure with a harmonious mix of short, medium, and long sentences.
