Good insights in this article. Employees who are given a counteroffer should really think hard about why the employers didn’t offer it in the first place without waiting for resignation. Ponder about their values and motives in making that counter offer and go back to the drawing board in making that decision to look around in the first place. Breaking free from the comfort zone is indeed hard, but it’s always better to face such hardships early in life to get ahead, if you are ambitious and visualusing ‘where am I in the next 3,5,10 years on my career path’. These days there’s no guarantee that employers will provide that comfort zone of your current role for you until your retirement, irrespective of your total commitment and dedication to the job. Forget about the annual performance review, which people make it in haste among other numerous pending tasks, when prompted and reminded by HR. You aren’t noticed by the relevant persons in your company if you are not engaging in a candid performance review quarterly or every 6 months at the least. Do not be shy to ask their perceptions of your work performance and find out how close you are doing with your career goals. Don’t hesitate to ask for such periodic reviews with your Managers, if there aren’t any in your company. Make the most of your work life by delivering your very best and getting rewarded too.

Considering Accepting a Counteroffer? Think Again! As a recruiter, I've noticed a growing trend: more candidates are accepting counteroffers as companies throw money at them to stay. While the extra cash might seem appealing, there are several reasons to think twice before saying yes to a counteroffer. Root Causes Remain Unchanged: The reasons you wanted to leave—be it career stagnation, work-life imbalance, or company culture—usually don't change with a counteroffer. Question of Loyalty: Accepting a counteroffer can make your employer question your loyalty and commitment. This might impact your career progression and future opportunities within the company. Temporary Fix: Statistics show that many employees who accept counteroffers end up leaving within a year. The initial issues often resurface, leading to the same dissatisfaction. Missed Opportunities: Staying might mean missing out on new challenges, growth opportunities, and a fresh environment that a new role could offer. Professional Reputation: Accepting a counteroffer after committing to a new employer can damage your professional reputation and relationships in the industry. What are your thoughts? Have you accepted a counteroffer before, or have you seen others do so? Ever been faced with a counteroffer dilemma? Here's a conversation I usually have with candidates that shows why accepting one might not be the best move for your career: Me: How do you feel about counteroffers? Candidate: I don’t know, depends on how much my current employer counters with. Me: So, just to confirm, you were open to this new opportunity because of some personal and professional issues at your current employer. You had several interviews, liked what you heard and they liked what they heard from you and y’all fell in love and wanted to get married. They made you an acceptable offer, which was more than you are making now and you accepted. They sent you an offer letter and you signed it sent it back and told the new hiring manager that you were coming to work for them. You go in to turn in your resignation, and your boss freaks out and offers you more or the same money as the new employer and there is a possibility that you accept it. Candidate: Well that does sound kinda crappy doesn’t it? Me: Here's why taking a counteroffer is a career misstep: ➡ Your worth shouldn't be determined by a resignation letter. If they value you now, why weren't you worth it before? ➡ Counter offers rarely solve the underlying issues that led you to explore new opportunities in the first place. ➡ Stats show that 70% leave within 6 months and 90% within a year post-counter offer acceptance. ➡ The perception of disloyalty can hinder promotions and trust within your current company. ➡ Burning bridges with the new company; they won't likely welcome you back. Taking a counteroffer is a bad move for your career, that’s why I will not put anyone into a process that might accept a counteroffer.

When you get a counteroffer, it's not as straight forward to deal with as some might think - there are ups and downs along the way to think about. Here's a look at what you should weigh up when considering a counter offer: 🤔 Remember that a counteroffer means your current job values you. It's ok to appreciate it and say thanks! That shows good manners and could be useful later, no matter if you stay or go. ⏳ Don't rush your decision. Think about why you wanted to leave in the first place - your role at work, the culture, or chances to progress. Are these still issues? 🔍 Look at the counteroffer closely. It's not just about a pay rise right now. Consider if it's good for your career in the long run, your own growth, work-life balance, and if it fits with the company's values. 🤝 Be honest with the new job about the counteroffer, communicate about it broadly without sharing too much detail. This conveys your integrity and who knows, they might even improve their offer! 🕊️ If you decide to leave, do it gracefully. Plan your exit, but refrain from broadcasting your decision publicly before having a conversation with both employers. A graceful exit is as essential as a courteous entrance. 🌿 Choose what's best for your career in the long-term, not just immediate benefits. Choose the path that will bring sustained enrichment to your professional and personal life, not merely a quick advantage. Keep in mind that your professional community is interconnected, and you may cross paths with the same individuals in the future. A thoughtful and respectful approach to handling a counteroffer will leave a lasting positive impression. #SimpleTips #CareerChoices #JobMoves
