Last week, I had the pleasure of meeting and coaching a talented Canadian engineer who recently arrived in Australia. Despite his impressive qualifications and experience, he was struggling to secure interviews due to not being a permanent resident or citizen yet. Many companies automatically screen out applicants without PR/citizenship, even when facing talent shortages. This skilled engineer had been applying on job sites like SEEK for weeks without success. It was disheartening to see such valuable talent going unrecognized simply due to visa status. Since arriving, I have been going through the cycle of work, workout, eat, sleep, so it seems that my body has not been able to adapt yet. Eating out everyday contributed to the crash as well. Moreover, in Astana capital, the wind will suddenly blow, rain will suddenly fall, and the sun will come out suddenly. No wonder why Astana holds the second place title after Ulaanbaatar in terms of the most extreme, coldest, or harshest climate capital city in the world. The good news is that many companies have started posting new job offers on https://www.lambda.global today. Happy to see more Remote and Hybrid openings. There is also a job offer from Kazakhstan ;) Mongolian talents signups are back up again as they seem to have returned from Naadam vacation. In total, more than 1,600 top talents have verified in the last month only. Of course, about 2400+ registered but only handful of them have passed the verification processes as we only onboard top talents! Hey graduates. I know that you are desperately looking for a job, but don’t let companies take advantage of you or your skills. With your education and qualifications, you should be paid for the work you do. I’m going to tell you a story that happened to me after I quit my job as a field technician and was searching for new employment. It had been about a month since I started my job search, and I finally got an interview. I prepared thoroughly, dressed in formal attire, and went to the interview, even though the job was for a field technician. I wanted to present myself well and gave a perfect presentation. Everything went well until the recruiter told me that I would have to work for free for two weeks. At that time, I didn’t have a full-time job; I was just driving for Uber to make money. Despite my desperation, I knew that working for free was not a good idea. I told the recruiter that this practice wasn’t legal in Canada. He responded with, “Oh, I don’t know,” and gave me his email address, saying I could send my references if I was still interested in the job. Even though I was desperate for work, something inside me prevented me from accepting the offer. I knew my worth and what I could bring to a company. Companies shouldn’t take advantage of people like us. I won’t mention the name of the company in public (but please do inbox me to get the name of the company and stay away), but if you go to an interview and someone says you have to work for free under the guise of a training period, don’t be fooled. In Canada, even training periods are paid.
