The hallmark of good instruction is, like good design, it's seamingly invisible. That is, when learners are focused on the material rather than on the mechanics of how it’s presented or the personality of the instructor, the learning process becomes more immersive. However, relationship building is necessary to culitvate the requisite trust and motivation. An instructor who is too removed from the learner may struggle to inspire, engage, or relate in a way that fosters trust or help build meaning around ideas. Nevertheless, if we overemphasize the teacher’s persona, it can become a distraction. If the teacher's personality or personal interactions become more memorable than the content, it could suggest that the learning goals are being overshadowed by the individual, diverting focus from the material itself. This can cause illusory learning. Where you think you learned what you were supposed to becuase you walked away from the engagement happier than when you entered it. You 'felt' like you learned because the experience left you light. So, is there a sweet spot? Maybe. But, we can't all be like Prez from The Wire. If you have to choose, go for instructor over confidant. It's not about them liking you. It's about them liking you enough to trust you enough to pay attention to what you're treaching them. Learning is just the beginning! As a designpreneur, I have realized that learning is just step one and there is more to go. The most important step in the entire learning process is to tune your brain to think outside the box by slowly eliminating the customary way of thinking and limiting ourselves. What most of them think, 📌To be illogical is a waste of time 📌Observing the surroundings doesn't help much 📌Conversing Off-topic with your colleagues isn't necessary 📌To master a skill is to master the tool 📌Answers are more important than questions What the Actual truth is, ✅Illogical thinking can enhance your creative thinking ✅Nature is the source of inspiration for everything we have today. ✅Conversing interesting topics with colleagues teaches you to respect differences in opinion and can drastically build confidence ✅To master a skill is to master the tuning of your brain to explore more ✅Questions are more important than answers 𝗪𝗲 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗽𝗵𝗶 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗦𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻🌟 #designleadership #designpreneur #designthinking #learningtherightway

I don't know about any of my friends here, but I've made some pretty epic mistakes that have taught me a lot over the years. Accidental fires, locking myself out of a car that was unlocked, trying to ride a bike without understanding how gears work- Bianca Baumann you'd appreciate how funny that one was... When it comes to learning design though, here's a little fun you can have... Don't just make errors when you're learning. Design them in. Seriously (as long as they're safe) I want you to be a little devious in your learning designs, not just because it's a fun way to be a bit piratey, but because there's a scientific reason behind it. Think about it, are you more or less attentive to something when you make a mistake? Designing in errors causes friction and awareness which can alert the brain, making those errors a catalyst for heightened focus. By introducing errors you get to sharpen attention while challenging someone to reassess, realign, and recalibrate their cognitive efforts. YARR!!!! It's also a great way to embed measure into your learning design. Has the error been caught or did someone bypass it? What does that tell ya? I did this in my cohort program last week to not only teach the concept but demonstrate it by embedding an error into one of my slides. 30mins later I asked if anyone had caught it. Not everyone did and as a bonus, there was more learning that came from that moment (which I'll do another post about because it was a great one) So have a little fun thinking of ways you can embed errors into your learning designs, kinda like the ones I did in this post. 🏴☠️😜🧠 You can also check out "Joining Forces with Your Brain" I thought the errors I made were so good, that I added them as bloopers into the series. It’s good to challenge the brain during training. But it shouldn’t come from understanding the meaning of sentences. It should come from applying the content in real-world scenarios. When training content is narrated or read, clarity is essential. The structure of sentences and paragraphs makes a big difference. Bear with me even if you’re not a grammarian. And actually, it’s not about grammar. Text can be grammatically correct but still poorly written, particularly for learning. Check out these two examples: EXAMPLE 1 ❶ Don't just rely on your physical agility or the nearest blunt object. Mastering the art of playing dead—very, very convincingly—might just be your best option. Staying absolutely motionless and holding your breath is key when you're surrounded by zombies, even though every survival instinct is screaming otherwise. 👎In this paragraph, the reason for the instructions isn’t clear until the end of the paragraph. 👎You’re confused and don’t understand why you even need to be considering whether to rely on agility or weapons. 👎Once you do understand, you’ll need to rewind or reread the whole thing. 👎Compound this situation with multiple paragraphs in a similar structure and the learning experience has fallen apart. EXAMPLE 2 ❷ If you ever find yourself surrounded by zombies, don't rely solely on your physical agility or the nearest blunt object. Instead, master the art of playing dead—very, very convincingly. The best zombie repellent is your ability to hold your breath and stay absolutely motionless, even when it goes against every survival instinct you have. 👍This paragraph provides context right off the bat: You’re surrounded by zombies. That's kind of important. 👍Knowing the scenario upfront helps connect the dots as you read through the instructions, making the learning process smoother and stickier. 👍Clear and concise writing is critical in online learning. I use this trigger question to check my writing: Did I lead with the zombies? 🔥This approach ensures learners don't waste time deciphering the message, and allows them to focus their mental energy on relevant challenges. #instructionaldesign #constructiontraining

🅽🅾🆃🅴🆂 THAT 🆂🅿🅴🅰🅺 FOR THEMSELVES! Notetaking is a form of reinforcement that can work again and again in the long run as and when you revisit them. However, rigorous and exhaustive notes can be tedious in revision as well. What could be an alternative? Making them short by only including the key points just like it is done in a presentation. But even this approach has a coach. You might forget the details. Plus it doesn't take care of the different learning styles of notetakers. How about a method that covers it all - text, images, concepts, logic, story/flow, and brevity in words? This new approach of notetaking can work wonders for your learners as not just it ensures that notes are effective but also the process of note-taking itself is not boring anymore. #visualnotetaking #learninganddevelopment #learning #writerpoojadubey #talmondconsulting

Were you a 'tuition' generation kid? Did a 'teacher' introduce you to the main 'topic'? Did you made 'notes' while he/she elaborated eloquently on their 'subject'? Did he/she solve few 'sample' problems for you? Did you made a note of the problems you couldn't solve after a feeble attempt? Did they 'solve' those problems next day while you again made a 'note' of how? (One of my school friend took it to another level when he made one tuition teacher solve the problems given by another tuition teacher and vice versa, his mother got him two tuitions in Maths to accelerate his learning curve!) 😂 There can't be a more worse way to learn, apply, internalise! Many of that generation are in important positions in the corporates now, this is the only way they think learning and application works. That explains why we get so many requests for 'industry specific' use cases, references from the same 'domain', 'exercises' which 'simulate' real work scenarios and 'handbooks' which lists step by step 'implementation' approach. Introduce the abstract, discuss, delve deep, think and introspect on why. Contextualise, pick small problems to solve. Build an approach - discuss your approach with experts - explore options. Iterate and increment. Internalize & evolve. That is the more stable, sustainable, rewarding adoption approach.
