Are instructional design (ID) jobs still in demand? Definitely! Yes, the market may feel competitive with many #OpenForWork banners - but that’s a sign of ongoing demand for skilled ID professionals. Businesses continue to recognize the value of instructional design in developing effective training programs. I’ve also seen some companies might be cautious about growth due to factors like budget constraints. I also know there's an alternative that can benefit both businesses and ID professionals: staff augmentation. This approach offers flexibility so businesses scale their teams as needed, negotiate payment terms, and maintain control over project timelines. And ID jobs would just keep existing! At my company, we're actively seeking ID professionals, confident that the industry will keep evolving, just a little bit different than before the pandemic. Just imagine: having another team member from an external company but working the exact hours you need them to. An extra set of hands is much needed in small L&D teams! I was inspired by a recent discussion with Starla Wehrli, M.Ed. Instructional Designer - I had fun chatting with you!! What do you think? Have you explored staff augmentation or know someone who has? --- 🔔 Tap the profile bell to catch my next post. ✉️ Need an eLearning team by your side? Hi! I’m Shawntay Skjoldager, Founder and Chief Trainologist of The Instructional Design Company! I am a subject matter expert in instructional design who has successfully transitioned from teaching 5th-grade to becoming an instructional designer and eLearning developer. In 2000, I started substitute teaching. By 2001, I was full-time teacher teaching 5th grade social studies and science. In 2007, I had a pretty serious life change. My teaching salary became the only salary, and it wasn’t enough to provide for my son and I in the way that I had wanted. So, I started exploring a teaching career change. I wasn’t sure where to go. I struggled to identify how my skills were applicable to other jobs…until I ran across a posting for a training specialist job, which was a combo of instructional design and training facilitation. It was then that I realized that training and development could be the change I was looking for. As I read through the job posting, I could see that I had some of the skills and decided to go for it. I got the job! After a series of skill-based interviews (3 of them), I was hired. I didn’t have any experience or a degree in instructional design or training, but I did have experience in curriculum design, teaching, and classroom management. I later found that these skill sets were practically the same but labeled differently for a new adult audience. Fast forward, I went from teacher to corporate instructional designer, then to freelancer, and back to corporate instructional designer. Now, I am ready to help you on your journey to becoming an instructional designer. There can be two different types of instructional designers depending on the company you work for. I have experienced the Jack or Jill type of instructional designer more than any other type, but I have experienced both. There are pluses and minuses to both, but it really comes down to your personal preference. Both instructional designer types are equally good. You have to decide where you want to start and where you want to end up and create the path which gets you there. Personally, I like knowing a little bit about it all and having my areas where I shine most but there is no right or wrong answer. The advantage of knowing a little about it all is that it makes you more marketable in the job market. Interested in the pros and cons of these two instructional designers?
