Chilean Mining Deal Sparks Controversy: Lawmakers Question Codelco’s Purchase of Quebrada Blanca Stake Chilean lawmakers have raised a complaint with the National Economic Prosecutor’s Office (FNE) against Codelco and Enami, accusing them of anti-competitive practices related to Codelco’s purchase of a 10% stake in the Quebrada Blanca mine. The complaint argues that the transaction was conducted at prices below market value, sparking concerns about the transparency and fairness of the deal, and suggesting it could harm both state-owned companies and distort the market. In response, Enami’s leadership defended the valuation methodology, emphasizing that the investment’s value should be assessed differently depending on the project’s stage—whether it is in exploration, development, or exploitation. They also pointed out that the significant cost increase for Quebrada Blanca Phase 2, which nearly doubled to $9 billion, did not enhance the project’s valuation. Enami suggested benchmarking this transaction against similar deals, such as the 2018 purchase of a 30% stake in Quebrada Blanca by a third party, which valued a 10% stake at $416 million. The outcome of this case could have significant repercussions for Chile’s mining industry and broader economic environment.

⛏️ Eramet's subsidiary, Société Le Nickel - SLN - ERAMET has encountered difficulties with its #nickel mining operations in #NewCaledonia. 📉 #SLN's #mining production plummeted by 32% in the first quarter compared to the previous year due to issues surrounding mining permits. Operations have been halted in the northern province of New Caledonia since mid-April, due to disputes with authorities over the renewal of financial guarantees, with #Eramet's proposal for a one-year extension rejected as inadequate. This adds to the struggles of the New Caledonian nickel industry, prompting a proposed rescue package from the French government. Despite these issues, Eramet remains optimistic, expanding production in Indonesia and Gabon while forecasting increased output for lithium in Argentina.
