It is with this statement, in which all the team strongly believes, that we are now officially launching the new Fraunhofer Italia claim. A claim that has always driven us through our daily work, but we have never pointed it out before. Lately, also due to the important changes that 2024 will bring, we felt the urge to make our vision really visible to everyone. At a symposium celebrating the 20-year anniversary of the law that authorized the National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI), Doyle Edwards (Brewer Science), Reginald Rogers (University of Missouri-Columbia), and Jameson Wetmore (Arizona State University) discussed the responsible development of #nanotechnology. The discussion was moderated by Treye Thomas (U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission). Here are a few quotes from this panel discussion:   “Nanotechnology has done a great job making interdisciplinarity much bigger and I think that has made this community more robust,” Wetmore said. “I think there’s one thing we haven’t done quite as well: I don’t know that the interdisciplinary nature has trickled down. I still think that many of our programs, especially at the undergraduate level, are very siloed, very focused on single disciplines.”   “One of the challenges of responsible development of #nanotechnology is regulations and oversight. We need to make sure that we facilitate responsible development from the bottom up, not top down,” Edwards said.   “How do we use responsible development to help us with our future research directions?” Rogers said. “Our students can think about these things if we sow the seeds [and ask them:] ‘How are you going to do a world of good?’ ‘How will be a responsible development citizen for the future?’ Because the future is theirs.”   #NNI20  https://lnkd.in/g5-MiwmB

We are thrilled to announce the launch of the new Fraunhofer flagship project "ORCHESTER — Digital ecosystem for a resilient and sustainable supply of functionally reliable materials".  Global challenges including geopolitical risks as well as regulatory requirements lead to major uncertainties in industry and society due to disruptive material flows in the supply of materials. Among other resources, nickel, magnesium and aluminium as well as rare earths are on the European list of critical raw materials for 2023. However, industry needs these resources to manufacture a wide range of products. This is where this Fraunhofer flagship project comes in.  The focus of ORCHESTER is to ensure a resilient and sustainable supply of functionally reliable #materials and to harmonize value chains with climate, social and environmental aspects. To do so, we combine digitally integrated high-throughput screening methods based on experimental and simulation techniques as well as different kinds of data sources into a #digital #ecosystem that provides integrable solutions for evaluating functional safety and enables recommendations for action based on a digital knowledge base. Its effectiveness will be demonstrated through three application examples in the context of energy transition, showing that our research results are applicable in practice and offer real added value for industry. ORCHESTER is an important step in the development of sustainable and resilient material supply — a blueprint for future crises and the holistic design of "green" materials, processes and products. We are delighted to announce that Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is on board as one of our Partners for the #Curious2024 conference! The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, based in Germany, is one of the world’s leading applied research organizations. It plays a crucial role in the innovation process by prioritizing research in key future technologies and transferring its research findings to industry in order to strengthen Germany as a hub of industrial activity as well as for the benefit of society. Founded in 1949, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft currently operates 76 institutes and research units throughout Germany. Its nearly 32,000 employees, predominantly scientists and engineers, work with an annual business volume of 3.4 billion euros; 3.0 billion euros of this stems from contract research, which is divided into three funding pillars. Fraunhofer generates a share of this from industry and license-fee revenue, totaling 836 million euros. This high proportion of industrial revenue is Fraunhofer's unique selling point in the German research landscape. Another share of contract research revenue comes from publicly funded research projects. The final share is base funding supplied by the German federal and state governments and enables our institutes to develop solutions now that will become relevant to the private sector and society in a few years.
